The next night, Friday, February 7 at 10:00PM an all-new episode of Helix airs during the series’ regular timeslot. In the episode entitled, “Antiqatiga,” Dr. Farragut (Billy Campbell) and Dr. Jordan (Jordan Hayes) make headway in decoding the virus while Dr. Hatake (Hiroyuki Sanada) secretly attempts to ‘cure’ Dr. Walker (Kyra Zagorsky) before the Illaria Corporation’s reinforcements arrive at the base.

Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to the high-tech research facility, Arctic Biosystems, to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that may hold the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation. However, the lethal threat is just the tip of the iceberg, and as the virus evolves, the chilling truth begins to unravel.

Billy Campbell (Killing Lincoln, The Killing) stars as Dr. Alan Farragut, leader of the Centers for Disease Control outbreak field team called upon to investigate and control a potential outbreak. Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, 47 Ronin) also stars as Dr. Hiroshi Hatake, director of Arctic Biosystems and its mysterious viral research program.

Helix also stars Kyra Zagorsky (Supernatural) as Dr. Julia Walker; Mark Ghanimé (Emily Owens, M.D.) as Major Sergio Balleseros; Jordan Hayes (House at the End of the Street) as Dr. Sarah Jordan; Meegwun Fairbrother as Daniel Aerov; Catherine Lemieux (White House Down) as Dr. Doreen Boyle, and Neil Napier (Riddick) as Dr. Peter Farragut.

Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander), Steven Maeda (Lost, The X-Files) who is also showrunner, Lynda Obst (Contact, Sleepless in Seattle), and Brad Turner (Hawaii Five-0, 24) are Executive Producers. The 13-episode series is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Kaji Productions and Lynda Obst Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television. Prolific director and producer Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights) directed the premiere episode, which was written by creator and co-executive producer, Cameron Porsandeh.

Chainsaw Sally Gets Animated

Horror’s anti-heroine, CHAINSAW SALLY, to be the center of a brand new animated television series. The series will be a spinoff of THE CHAINSAW SALLY SHOW starring April Monique Burril and created by JimmyO Burril. The Burrils are directly involved with the show.

Official Release Date and Artwork Reveal for Rabid Love

North America prepares to catch the virus on DVD and VOD March 4th, 2014

Midnight Releasing will be spreading Rabid Love on DVD and On Demand this coming March to all major and minor digital platforms, rental chains and more! The DVD features an outtakes reel, behind-the-scenes clips, and on-set vlogs by star Hayley Derryberry.

About the Film
In Rabid Love, a stereotypical weekend camping trip gets bloody when a stranger insinuates his way into the group and people start showing up dead. Is it a large wild animal? A blood-thirsty psychopath? Or maybe a mad scientist's super rabies virus infecting the friends one by one? Viewers will just have to find out for themselves by watching this unique slasher, stylishly made in homage to the 80's slashers that raised a generation of horror fans.

Written and directed by Paul J. Porter, Rabid Love stars Jessica Sonneborn (Bloody Bloody Bible Camp), Hayley Derryberry, Josh Hammond (Jeepers Creepers 2), and Brandon Stacy.

Synopsis
A group of recent college grads on a final camping trip together pursue their own agendas when it comes to relationships but must put aside their differences and try to survive when one of them disappears and something in the forest starts killing the rest.

Sanitarium 2013 - REVIEW

I was taking a little stroll around the video section of Wally World and came across this DVD. The cover art is what grabbed my attention. Not because it's anything overly spectacular but something about it jumped out at me. I'd never heard of it before so I was surprised to see the names attached to it and figured I'd give it a watch.

In this anthology type film, we're introduced to three patients of the sanitarium and watch as the stories of how they ended up there are told. 'Figuratively Speaking' is the story of an eccentric artist driven mad by his own creations. 'Monsters are Real' tells us the story of the abusive life of an eight year old. 'Up to the Last Man' gives us a glimpse into the psychopathy of obsession. Malcolm McDowell narrates these three tales as Dr. Stenson, the lead doctor at the sanitarium.

1) 'Figuratively Speaking' revolves around Gustav (John Glover), an artist known for creating super creepy dolls complete with a big dramatic display. It's opening night for his new exhibit and it seems our artist is on the verge of a melt down. He suffers from crippling migraines that make him believe his dolls are talking to him. It isn't until his friend Sam (Robert Englund) tries to take the show on the road that the dolls start telling him to do some very naughty things. To keep from spoiling things for you, I'll leave this synopsis at that.

There were great performances all the way around for this addition to this addition of the anthology. Glover did a pretty phenomenal job portraying madness. He's a very versatile actor who can really get into a character and bring it to life. Englund has a pretty minor role but plays it well, as usual. Walter Perez is Matteo, Gustav's right hand man, and fits perfectly into the mix.

Although this one wasn't my favorite of the three, it was beautifully shot and very well put together. Figuratively Speaking only takes place over the course of one night so there's not a whole lot of time for major character development but you get enough for everything to come together in the end. There's a sense of foreboding as you watch Gustav descend deeper and deeper into his own private hell.

2) 'Monsters are Real' is the most disturbing of the three tales. Steven (David Mazouz) is an eight year old boy with an abusive father (Chris Mulkey) who retreats within his own mind to mask the pain. Suspecting that something is going on at home, his teacher Ms. Lorne (Lacey Chabert) confronts the boy's father unknowingly triggering a chain of events that will change all of their lives.

What an amazing performance by Mazouz. If at the end of this story, you don't feel for the character of Steven, you have to be one hell of a heartless bastard. I could sit here and rave about how well he did all day but we must move along. He showed meek and he showed timid and he just makes your heart hurt for him. Mulkey did great as well. I kinda wanted to dick punch him after about 5 minutes of screen time so I guess that means he nailed it. You'd be hard pressed to find a bad performance by anyone here.

Again, the look of the film was very crisp and well shot and an all around solid short film.

 3) The final installment to Sanitarium, 'Up to the Last Man' centers on James Silo (Lou Diamond Phillips) a college professor obsessed with the Mayan Apocalypse. As his obsession grows, he becomes more and more convinced that it IS coming and inevitably drains the family's savings in order to build an elaborate underground shelter.

This one does a bit of a flip flop as there are a lot of flashbacks within the flashback (if that makes sense). Just make sure you pay attention so you can keep up and you'll find yourself watching the best short of the bunch. Phillips always does a great job but I'm not sure I've seen a performance like this from him before. It was a very emotional and intense rendition of a man on the brink of insanity.

This one has a very claustrophobic feel to it as the majority of it takes place down in the shelter. It's a dialogue heavy short but what do you expect from a film with basically a cast of one? This doesn't hurt the film at all. In fact it's probably what helps propel it into first place for me. When something is so well written, a lot of dialogue doesn't take anything away from the rest of the film.

All in all, Sanitarium is definitely worth a watch. I wouldn't categorize it as horror as much as a psychological thriller but I think it will be well received by genre fans. So, take a trip to the sanitarium and see what directors Bryan Ortiz, Bryan Ramirez and Kerry Valerrama have going on. Be sure to stop back by and tell us what you thought!

Sharknado 2: The Second One to Devour the Big Apple This July

NEW YORK – January 30, 2014 – They’re back – and shark happens! Syfy and The Asylum today announced that Ian Ziering and Tara Reid will reprise their roles as Fin and April in the eagerly awaited Sharknado sequel, Sharknado 2: The Second One, which begins filming in New York February 13.

Anthony Ferrante will once again direct a screenplay by Thunder Levin, who also wrote Sharknado, the iconic pop culture sensation which chainsawed its way through social media last summer.

In Sharknado 2: The Second One, a freak weather system turns its deadly fury on New York City, unleashing a Sharknado on the population and its most cherished, iconic sites – and only Fin and April can save the Big Apple.

Sharknado 2 is scheduled to premiere on Syfy in July.

Under the Bed 2012 - REVIEW

 

Boogeyman tales vary by culture but traditionally they are imaginary creatures created by adults to frighten children into submission. There isn't any specific set of rules when it comes to the Boogeyman. He can be something that lurks around the woods, hides in closets or dwells under the bed. His look comes in various forms as does his reasons for stalking children. I remember getting out of bed when I was little to turn the light off or go to the bathroom then making a mad dash and a frantic leap onto my bed because I was afraid of what MIGHT be hiding under there.

Neal (Jonny Weston) returns home two years after the traumatic event of losing his mother in a house fire. Even after two years away, he can't seem to shake his fear of the creature he thinks hides beneath his bed. Not only that but it seems his younger brother, Paulie (Gattlin Griffith), has been experiencing the same goings on since his brother left. Discovering, so far, that the creatures only weakness is light, they must work together to try and figure out how to defeat him and save themselves and their family.

Oh how I would love to give you a better synopsis for this film but that's about all the substance there is to it. By the end, the audience is left with more questions than answers. What is this monster? Where did it come from? Why is it stalking these particular two boys? What really happened to their mother? Why was Neal sent away? How does he move from one location to another but not follow Neal to the house he spent the prior two years in? Why is their house always so dark? And WHY is their Dad SUCH an asshole? Oh my God, my head hurts. There are so many missing pieces to the puzzle that is 'Under the Bed'. What started out as a phenomenal kid type horror movie (in the vein of Goosebumps) turned into a mishmash of… I don't even know what. The audience will spend the first two acts of the film without ever seeing the monster except for an arm here and there. The final act is where the action kicks in and where the film will likely lose most people.

The thing about a horror film is that generally there is a set of rules that are established early on. A great film will stick to those rules throughout. A good film will break one here or there. A lackluster film will break just about every rule it sets up for itself. And that's where director Steven C. Miller goes wrong... by breaking the very rules that he set up for his heroes and villains creating a film that even great acting can't save. There isn't a drop of gore in the first 3/4 of the film but the last ten to fifteen minutes turns into a gore fest of epic proportions. There are some brilliant creature and special effects done but by then it's too late to recover from the massive plot holes and the often inaudible dialogue. If you have a hankering for really good low key horror, check out some Goosebumps on Netflix or something. Anything to save yourself from what's under the bed.
