Topy 5 Horror Moives of 1989

The last year of just a fantastic decade for horror films.  The slasher films start to wain and die off but there are still a ton of great horror films in this year.  Although I have to say it is the worst year for 3 big franchises: Halloween 5, Friday the 13th Part 8 and Nightmare on Elms St part 5.  All 3 in my opinion are flops.  Each one had a giant success with the prev installments but could not sustain it.  Spoiler here!  None of those 3 make my top 5 list.

Stephen King the master!  This is one of my favorite King movie and one of the few films that actually scared me and gave me nightmares multiple nights in a row.  Very deserving of #5 on this list.

It's no secret to anyone who knows me that I am a Full Moon nut.  This it the one that started the Full Moon success that lasted through most of the 90's.  I don't care for this one as much as the sequels but I love it all the same.  No real notable actors in this one but a nice cameo by Barbara Crampton.

A controversial film to say the least but not because of the film itself but what went on behind the curtains.  Unfortunately this one will probably not see another release on DVD or BluRay.  If it did I would be surprised.  If you have never seen it I recommend it, you can watch the full movie on You Tube.  The quality is not great but unless you were lucky enough to get a copy that never really hit the shelves then it is the only way.

The 2nd sequel to the 1983 masterpiece starring Bruce's little sister Pamela Springsteen as our Transgender killer.  While this was filmed at the same time as Part II it was not released till a year later.  My favorite of the series honestly.

One of my favorite movies that is severely underrated.  Steve Miner, who is well recognized in the horror world, did a fantastic job with this film.  Not only is it creepy as shit but Julian Sands turns in an outstanding performance of a very evil warlock.  So yes this is my #1 of 1989!

Official Artwork Released for The Divine Tragedies

Writer and director Jose Prendes (The Haunting of Whaley House) and producers Jon and James Kondelik are excited to announce the beginning of principal photography for their fever dream: The Divine Tragedies! As well, the official movie poster has been released for the film, to coincide with the shoot. The official poster was designed by graphic artist Devin Koehler; fans of horror can preview the poster’s mesmerizing imagery here.

The Divine Tragedies, based loosely on the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case, tells the tale of Charles Brubaker (Graham Denman, The Haunting of Whaley House) and his half-brother Thomas Lo Bianco (Jon Kondelik, Airplane Vs. Volcano), who were raised by their arthritis-twisted, alcoholic mother (Barbara Crampton). The boys concoct a deadly game to test their superior intelligence against the dimwitted masses. This game will eventually lead to murder, and when Genevieve, a beautiful single mother, enters their lives they finally find the perfect girl for their first kill. But, problems arise when they quickly discover that Detective Homer Gaul (Ken Foree), a cop with a very special gift, is hot on their trail.

Here is the first look at the exquisite poster for this mind trip of film, designed by Koehler. Producer Jon Kondelik says of the poster’s quality: “I love the poster Devin has created for us. We’ve worked with him on several projects before and he continues to amaze us with his pieces, which are lovingly created throwbacks to the days of the classic artworks from the ‘70s and ‘80s.” Editors and horror fans can see the exquisite artistic detail in the artwork here.

Filming begins today! Film fans can follow the production on its Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/divinetragediesmovie

Barbara Crampton Joins Cast of The Divine Tragedies

Writer and director Jose Prendes (The Haunting of Whaley House) and producers Jon and James Kondelik are excited to announce the casting of the eternally beautiful Barbara Crampton (Your’re Next, Re-animator). Crampton joins her From Beyond co-star Ken Foree, in their new film The Divine Tragedies.

Barbara says of the film: “I am very excited to take part in Jose Prendes’s complex and disturbing film, The Divine Tragedies; deeply exploring the nature of relationships and the influence they provide while carving out our places in the world,” she says. “I am excited to play the mother of two brothers whose torturous tendencies exact horrific carnage to people they claim to both admire and love. Being reunited with one of my favorite co-stars, horror luminary Ken Foree, is an added delight!”

“Barbara is an actress that I have admired for years and I am beyond thrilled to have her on this film,” says Jose. “She glows with life and is really going to surprise people with her performance in this one. Not only does she love the material and respect it, which is the best compliment an actor can give, but she has raised the bar for us dramatically.”

You're Next (2011) - REVIEW

Well, I waited till You're Next came out on DVD to finally see what everyone has been talking about all year.  I went ahead and pre ordered the Blu Ray since it has been so hyped this year I figured that there was going to be little chance that I would downright hate it.  A fun fact: when looking this up on IMDB I saw this was actually made back in 2011 and just came out last year.

Paul (Rob Moran) and his wife Aubrey (Barbara Crampton) are going to vacation house were all of there children will be joining them for the weekend to celebrate their Anniversary.  As they enter the house the door seems to be open but nothing seems to be amiss until Aubrey hears a thump from the upstairs while cleaning.  Frightened she runs out of the house while Paul goes up to check it out.  Their Son Crispian (AJ Bowen) and his girlfriend Erin (Sharni Vinson) arrive and Crispian helps his Dad make sure the house is secure.  The next day the whole family arrives and they are sitting down for a nice dinner when it begins.  The rich family is now a target of a sadistic and brutal home invasion.  They are all now fighting for their lives being terrorized by 3 men on animal masks.  Who will make it out alive?

I am just going to say it right off the bat.  I liked Your're Next but I didn't love it.  I was a good movie don't get me wrong i enjoyed it but I think it is way over hyped and does not live up to everything I had heard up to this point.  Now having got that out of my system I am going to go on with my review.  One of the reasons I didn't totally love it was the story.  It wasn't real original and as a matter of fact I had 90% of if figured out within the first ten minutes of the movie.  It really is not too hard to figure out and that kind of took a lot away from it for me.

The cast however was a point of strength for the film.  Casting long time horror queen Barbara Crampton was a huge bonus. She seems to light up the screen with her performance in anything she is in.  I do have to give props to the main character played by Sharni Viinson as well.  Her strength and survival skills really reminded me of a strong female lead much like Heather Lagenkamp in Nightmare on Elm Street.  This film is definitely worth a watch maybe even two.  Just don't go into it expecting too much like I did.  I would rate this one 7 out of 10 stars.  As always stay twisted everyone!

Horrorhound Weekend Columbus Convention - Review

One of the best things about being a horror movie fan is attending the conventions that occur all over the country.  Meeting all the vendors in the industry along with some of the actors and actresses that appear in the movies you love.  While not all fun and games you do have to deal with the crowds and stand in sometimes very long lines, but if your a big enough fan its all well worth it.  It also depends on how well organizer for the event handles all the obstacles as well.  Horrorhound always does a great job of this.  There are always going to be complaints about the crowds and how large the facility is, but its a convention no matter how large the venue is its going to be crowded.  Horrorhound puts together one of the best cons twice a year every year since 2007 and this year in Columbus is no different.

This years theme was Women in Horror honoring some of the women who have made this genre great.  What Horrorhound has also done is pair some of the women up with their stalker or killer.  Example: Amy Steel was there and next to her was Steve Dash who played Jason in Friday the 13th Part 2. Clelebrity guests included: Adrienne BarbeauScout Taylor Compton, Danielle Harris, Lisa Wilcox, Cerina Vincent, Tyler Mane, Cassandra Peterson, Norman Reedus and many more.  The big name to me on this ballot was Pam Grier.  She had her own room to sign in, a very large conference table to hold her massive assortment of photos and also her book.

There were a few reunions such as From Beyond which included: Barbara Crampton, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon, and director Stuart Gordon.  Its also worth mentioning that all three were also in Re-Animator with Ian Patrick Williams who was also in attendance.  Another mini reunion was Rob Zombie's Halloween with Scout Taylor Compton, Danielle Harris and Tyler Mane.  Who is even larger in person than he looks in Halloween.  The big reunion was Day of the Dead.  Appearing from the movie was: Lori Cardille, Taso Stavrakis, Anthony Dileo, Mark Tierno, Debra Gordon, and John Vulich.

As i have said above Horrorhound has one of the best guest lineups around.  When you are there you can do nothing but have fun.  A few of the lines were long namely Norman Reedus's, Cassandra Peterson's and Pam Grier's.  I toughed it out through two of the lines and skipped meeting Cassandra Peterson which i may regret later but you can't meet them all i guess.  Well you can but that costs allot to do that.  I did have the pleasure of meeting majority of who was there. Even an added bonus i got to meet the actress I interviewed a couple months ago, Pretty Poison.  She is an absolute doll and cannot wait to see her in more films.  To wrap it up, it was an awesome weekend and i can't wait to do it again in September in Indy.  Stay twisted everyone!
