Horror Veteran Bill Oberst Jr. Takes to the Stage with Ray Bradbury's Pillar of Fire
Los Angeles, CA (May 28, 2015): Once upon a time, when Americans burned their horror comics, a young man named Ray Bradbury fought back with his typewriter...and a story about a living corpse.
Actor Bill Oberst Jr.'s theatrical reading of Ray Bradbury's Pillar Of Fire opens in Los Angeles on June 5, the anniversary of the author's death. It runs through June 25 at two Hollywood area theaters. Details and ticket information on the performance are at www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/2496.
Pillar Of Fire is set in the year 2349 on an Earth cleansed of all superstition - a place where Halloween, dark literature and burials are banned. Bodies are burned without ceremony in massive towers of cremation; the ashes of the forgotten dead blown into the wind. As Bradbury's tale opens, the last cemetery on the planet is nearly emptied when the last dead man in the world wakes up. William Lantry is a 400 year-old walking corpse filled with hate for the living and determined to teach this sterile and sensible world the meaning of fear.
Oberst, a rabid Bradbury fan, says he hopes to tour with Pillar Of Fire and other Bradbury stories. “Vincent Price used to tour the world with living renditions of Poe's works that delighted fans. I'd like to do the same with Ray Bradbury” he says. “These LA shows are a test. I want to prove that fans will respond to great horror and fantasy literature done live.” Oberst says he especially hopes to make a tour of American libraries as a way of honoring Bradbury's lifelong love affair with books.
Bradbury wrote the story in 1948 as comics like Tales From The Crypt, The Vault Of Horror and The Haunt Of Fear were being thrown into bonfires after a psychiatrist attacked them as morally corrupt in a best-selling book. “The campaign to cleanse young minds caught fire” says Oberst “and that's the atmosphere in which Bradbury created Pillar Of Fire, which makes the case that we need the dark in order to to balance the light. It's a passionate defense of Halloween and things that go bump in the night. I hope fans will support it if they are in Los Angeles in June. We who work in the darker genres still take heat from those who look down on us, but Ray Bradbury wasn't ashamed to have his name associated with horror, neither am I.”

Bill Oberst Jr. Receives Lon Chaney Award for Outstanding Achievement in Independent Horror Films
Actor Bill Oberst Jr. has received the "Lon Chaney Award for Outstanding Achievement in Independent Horror Films," at the FANtastic Horror Film Festival (FHFF) in San Diego. Ron Chaney, the great-grandson of Lon Chaney and the grandson of Lon Chaney Jr., was on hand along with Lon Chaney’s great-great-granddaughters Jaclynn and Jennifer to present Oberst with this first-ever award.
Festival organizers kept the award a secret to surprise Oberst, who has often cited Lon Chaney as a major influence and expressed a desire to play The Man Of A Thousand Faces on stage or screen. The actor was nearly speechless as Ron Chaney called him forward at the FHFF Awards Banquet. "My inner 14 year-old horror kid is in overdrive right now," he said. "Without the Chaney family there would be no horror genre."
Ron Chaney, speaking for the family, thanked the FHFF crowd for helping to keep the Chaney cinematic legacy alive. "We are honored to be here tonight to present this first ever Lon Chaney Award in the spirit and in the memory of my grandfather and great-grandfather," he said.Chaney is President & CEO of Chaney Entertainment, Inc. which manages licensing rights to the two Lons, and maintains The Official Chaney Site and store at: http://lonchaney.com/

Deadly Revisions 2013 - REVIEW
For a couple of years now, we here at TC have been posting press releases and updates on the debut film from writer/director Gregory Blair. The synopsis and outline of the film was always interesting to me plus it stars one of my personal favorites, Bill Oberst Jr. so I was pretty excited for this one. I've been binge watching Supernatural for the past month so I kinda needed something different.
Grafton Torn (Bill Oberst Jr.) is a successful horror writer who has just awakened from a coma with no memory of what happened. Things take an ugly turn when he decides to spend some time alone at his friend Deter's (Mikhail Blokh) secluded cabin. When his doctor suggests that he see a hypnotherapist to try and recover his memory, Grafton begins seeing Dr. Ally Morris (Cindy Merrill). Each session brings out more and more memories that only pose more questions than answers leaving him in a life and death struggle to figure out what is real and what isn't.
Oberst gives a great performance as a man teetering on the edge of insanity (no, I'm not just saying that). This is the first time I've seen him go from one extreme to the other and he managed to play both parts AND the transition between the two with ease. And let's face it, acting ain't easy or we'd all be doing it. There are also some good performances from Blokh and Merrill. When a film lies so heavily on such a small cast, it's important to have actors that can carry their weight.
The story is a good one and it's well written. A twisted mind bender that zigs and zags until the end and just when you think you have it all figured out, ya don't. Blair throws in one plot twist after another but still manages to make it come full circle. It does start off a little slow but Blair manages to maintain the level of tension throughout. There's not much in the way of blood and gore but the film doesn't need it to convey the point. Being that this is Blair's first time writing and directing, I'd say he's got more promise than most and I look forward to seeing more of his work in the future.
Of course, it's not without it's rough spots. Some of the scenes were a little dark for my taste and the lighting in a few of them was a bit rough but neither were so distracting that it took away from the overall film. Definitely worth a watch.

Teaser Trailer Released for Deadly Revisions
Apr. 9, 2014 - LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Film fans can now get a sneak peek of writer/director Gregory Blair’s “DEADLY REVISIONS” with the teaser trailer released this week. Tight and tense, the teaser is reveals just enough to get audiences ready for Blair’s unique blend of psychological thriller and horror film.
Emmy Award winning horror movie favorite Bill Oberst, Jr. appears as Grafton Torn— an amnesiac horror film writer for whom hypnotherapy and nightmares reveal terrifying images that just can’t be real. Or can they? With an unreliable narrator, the audience has to keep reevaluating the information they get as the slow burn script piles on increasingly unexpected plot twists. In "DEADLY REVISIONS", remembering can be murder!
A valentine to the horror genre, the film provides all the spooky staples fans adore: dark passageways, creaking floorboards and things lurking in the shadows. At the same time, there are also loving winks to masters such as Brian DePalma, Sam Raimi and Alfred Hitchcock. Through the combination of these elements, as our hero examines his past, the film also examines the art of the horror film itself and its own value as a fun and safe place to confront our fears.
The film has already garnered Blair the EOTM Award for “Best Director of an Indie Horror Film” and reviewers have lauded it as “Amazing” (Chris Mackey, GuestStars Blog) and “Mind Blowing” (Char Hardin, Charred Remains Blogpost).

Lionsgate Drops New Trailer for Children of Sorrow
Lionsgate has dropped a new official trailer for what has to be After Dark Original's best film to date, the unsettling cult drama Children Of Sorrow, set for release March 4th on DVD, Digital HD and VOD from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
The film, which director Jourdan McClure describes as "a slice of bad life," was picked up by After Dark and Lionsgate after festival wins at Sacramento Horror Film Festival and Hollywood's Shockfest Film Festival which included two Best Feature awards, a Best Actor Award for Bill Oberst Jr. and a Best Acting award for the ensemble cast.
Bill Oberst Jr. says the role of cult leader Simon Leach was "personal and terrifying." The actor lived in isolation during the shoot in order to get into the mindset of the Jim Jones-like Leach. Director McClure and writer Ryan Finnerty are quoted on the film's IMDb page as saying that the film's most disturbing scenes were not in the original screenplay; "We threw most of the script out the window once we got to the desert and rewrote based on the actual personalities of our actors. If it feels real, that may be why."
European viewers will have their introduction to Children Of Sorrow this fall; the film will screen at Europe's largest horror con, The Weekend Of Horrors in Germany, where Oberst will be a celebrity guest.

Arthouse Horror Flick COYOTE Releases Clip; Wins Awards
Here's a clip from an arthouse horror film that has been banned at some film festivals and has won awards at others in its first public screenings: controversial director Trevor Juenger's Coyote. The film stars Bill Oberst Jr. as an insomniac writer whose sleep-deprived hallucinations distort reality as paranoia drives him to extreme violence. The surreal shocker, which mixes arthouse and horror, is shopping for distribution and it's first public screenings have elicited strong reaction.
Director Trevor Juenger tweeted last week from a festival, "Someone in the audience keeps yelling What Is This? and What Does It Mean? We're going to give him an aneurysm by film's end." Juenger says a college screening of Coyote was shut down in mid-film by an administrator citing "extreme violence" while another public screening in the director's hometown of St. Louis had to be cancelled when the theater owner refused to run the film due to "extreme content."
Coyote's IMDb page shows 27 reviews, all positive. The film's wins include Best Feature at the 2013 Unreal Film Festival in Memphis and three Feature Film Awards at Pollygrind Underground Film Festival 2013 in Las Vegas, including a Best Actor Award for Oberst.
Fans of the surreal and the extreme can decide for themselves once Coyote gets distribution. In the meantime, here's a clip that director Juenger says "may be my favorite sequence in the film," the moments before Oberst's character snaps completely.

Trailer Released for Horror Comedy, A Grim Becoming
Indie Horror icons Bill Oberst Jr, Devanny Pinn, Lynn Lowry, Melantha Blackthron, Jessica Cameron, and Valerie Lynn Hanna unite for Adam R Steigert’s A Grim Becoming which also stars Brandyn T Williams and features Britt Griffith [SyFy’s Ghost Hunters] Melyssa Jade, Michael Sciabarrasi, Patrick Mallette, Mike Sarcinelli, Christopher Brechtel, and Aryn Fitzgerald. The offical theatical trailer is here!
A Grim Becoming is a horror comedy that follows Raphael, a young and bitter executive, who is on the verge of losing a multimillion dollar architectural deal with a large distribution company lead by the awkward Stanford brothers. Raphael suffers a sudden death in his family and has to immediately leave to go to the funeral in his home town of Metzburgh. Seeing this as his big chance to get ahead is Wayne, a jealous co-worker, who is in competition with Raphael. As Raphael returns to Metzburgh, he experiences a life changing event: witnessing a Grim Reaper taking a soul. This sighting results in Raphael becoming a Reaper and having to explore his own conscience and the lengths he will go to get his own life back. But Death, or as he likes to call himself “Magoo”, has other plans for the naive young executive.
A Grim Becoming possibly may have one of the best actor line-ups in independent horror film of 2014. Director Adam R Steigert had this to say about the project “A Grim Becoming was a fun and hard project to work on. I don’t think there was an easy day during filming. One of my favorite things about this project is that we used a lot of puppetry in this film. So when you watch the finished project, a lot of the creature effects look so natural because we did them practically: no CGI involved. I even at times worked as a puppeteer during filming. When it came to working as many indie icons as we had on this film, I was even taken back at times saying: ‘How the hell did I get a chance to direct so many horror icons on one project?’ I am seriously looking forward to seeing what an audience thinks about the final product because a lot of these actors are taken out of the normal types of roles they play in films.”

Circus of the Dead also stars Parrish Randall (Gut Instincts), Brad Potts (Puppet Master X: Axis Rising), Chanel Ryan, Ryan Clapp, Rusty Edwards and Mike Williams. This title is currently in post-production and horror fans can preview several bloody stills, here.
Actor Oberst Jr. has something to say about his character Papa Corn. Oberst Jr. describes Corn as "a homicidal serial rapist with a taste for necrophilia. His day job happens to be as a circus clown. He and his highly-disturbed fellow clowns use the circus as cover for some of the darkest and most graphic acts of violence I have ever seen in a script or on set." Circus of the Dead is full out gory horror! Oberst Jr. also promises brutality, from Corn: "the effects team, led by Marcus Koch and Matthew Ash, has been churning out corpses and body parts non-stop for the entire 5-week shoot.” This film will satisfy even the most experienced gorehounds.
Circus of the Dead will also shock fans, in just a few months. Oberst Jr. gives fans a behind-the-scenes account of the shoot “we've sawed off heads, hands and tongues; we have stripped the skin off a living man's face, drooled clown slime on multiple females in varying states of undress and I have chased a stark naked woman through a parking garage, with a real cattle prod!” Circus of the Dead charts new horror territory in 2014!

Quotes:
Unlike many films seeking the support of filmmakers and film lovers across the various crowd-funding platforms, we felt it appropriate to seek out and obtain some feedback and insights on the HEIR screenplay first in order to reassure potential supporters that we have the goods! Below are a few of the supportive and enthusiastic comments from a cross-section of the horror community including critics, festival directors, distributors and cult horror actor Bill Oberst Jr. himself.

"HEIR promises to deliver a disgusting dose of Lovecraftian body-horror that will make you squirm in more ways than one!"
- Jason Thorson, (Editor-in-chief, RavenousMonster.com)
"Considering Familiar, its last work, I would say that Fatal Pictures will definitely bring us, with Heir, a must-see short film. Graphically shocking and original with its body modifications, i would bet it'll be a great masterpiece. The horror in its very best form: disturbing and unique."
- Nicolas Tonsho, Fantaspoa International Film Festival
"A monstrous spin on an all-too-familiar tale of bad parenting."
- Alyse Wax, FEARnet
"With HEIR, Fatal Pictures have planned a stunning and memorable swansong. Set to delve into darker and more grotesque avenues than they have even ventured before, HEIR is certainly going to be another sucker punch from one of the most exciting independent studios out there. Be afraid, because you most definitely won’t be prepared."
- Colin McCracken, Zombie Hamster
"Powell is an unflinching examiner of the perversion of humanity that is born of our deepest fears, doubts, regrets and hidden hurts. He reminds us we walk among the wounded and mutated every day."
- Dave Pace Bonello, Fangoria
"Powell and his producing partner Zach Green are breaking new and horrific ground with HEIR. This project shows that the pair's festival monster FAMILIAR was no fluke; Powell and Green are in the vanguard of horror's new cinematic masters. HEIR is an honest-toGod, bonafide new notion of terror."
- Bill Oberst Jr.
Our goal is not only to create a chillingly memorable short film but to demonstrate what can be done after a film is funded. Our supporters will see the film they helped make in festivals around the world, in print and in distribution. That is our commitment, to produce one of the most successful crowd funded film projects to date. In need of further proof? You can check out our previous short film Familiar on FEARnet athttp://www.fearnet.com/shorts/familiar.
Description:
In addition to several new and exciting collaborations, HEIR will also mark FATAL PICTURES’ introduction to crowd funding. The campaign to fund the hard costs of the production will be launched shortly. This process will allow the film community a unique insight and stake in this disturbing horror tale. The combination of talent and passion we have brought on board so far means we have a great chance to create something special, but we can't do it without the support of film lovers, filmmakers and daydreamers just like you!
Support comes in many shapes and forms, a "like" or "share" of our page means a lot! This is your chance to help contribute to what stands to be the final short film from FATAL PICTURES before we stage our feature film debut. This is also your chance to take advantage of some of these great, fresh new perks!
• The full rights to an original, unproduced short film script from Fatal Pictures will be up for grabs. Make it, expand it into a feature, do whatever you like with it, it's
yours! The script, entitled VESSEL, embodies everything that makes a Fatal Pictures short film what it is; complex characters, disturbing social commentary
and our signature blend of horror and drama. Matchflick.com describes VESSEL as "a unique blend of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE and
FRANKENSTEIN".
• The original HEIR poster painting, signed by key members of the cast and crew. This is a one of a kind reward that one special supporter will claim.
• For fans of our previous film Familiar, we will be creating limited edition dvd/blurays, which will feature an extra special, exclusive bonus feature, which will
remain a secret until the discs ship. These limited editions will be the first physical release of Familiar for home use from Fatal Pictures, something that’s
been a long time coming!
• Continuing with the exclusives, two major props from our previous films will be up for grabs! From WORM, Geoffrey Dodd’s suitcase of horrors (hand crafted by
writer/director Richard Powell) and from FAMILIAR, the squid monster which John Dodd digs out from his leg! This unique piece of our filmmaking history was
created by the spectacular FX team The Butcher Shop (the same team on HEIR) and comes covered in dried blood and all!
These are just a few of our unique rewards, more to be announced shortly!

Deadly Revisions Writer Digs Deeper into the Dark Side With The Straying
Gregory Blair’s screenwriting is becoming known in the indie world for delivering creepy tales of horror and suspense. DEADLY REVISIONS (currently in post-production with PIX/SEE Productions) tells the tale of an amnesiac horror film writer who battles nightmarish memories. THE SISTERHOOD (currently in pre-production with Enmar Productions as “The Gateway”) pits a murderess against some increasingly suspicious nuns. Blair’s newest creation, THE STRAYING, promises not only to go down a similar dark path, but to take a few unexpected turns.
“It’s a monster movie,” Blair admits. “But it’s a monster movie unlike any other.” In THE STRAYING, two creatures with very different histories and world views are thrust together with unexpected results. “While there are elements of the standard horror film, think more in the spirit of “The Hunger” than “Predators Meets Aliens”; the bulk of the battles are more psychological, more sociological. And, as the two monsters learn from each other, I hope the audience will also learn something about prejudice, perceptions and perhaps our own humanity.”
Blair wrote the film for himself and fellow DEADLY REVISIONS actor Bill Oberst Jr (Best Actor, Shockfest 2012). Oberst, who read Blair's script over the holidays, says he is intrigued. "One of my idols, Lon Chaney Sr., once said 'I endeavor in each of my roles to bring humanity to those we call monsters.' That is what I am striving for now, so the underlying idea of THE STRAYING; that everyone has the potential to be a monster and every monster has elements of humanity within them; resonated strongly with me. I liked what I read."
Blair agrees and hopes the film touches chords across the board. “While it’s an ostensibly small story about two lost souls, I hope people will glean the echoes that speak to all prejudice, including ageism, lookism, homophobia—you name it. I think most people feel like a victim of the dark side of that at least once in their lives and so this movie is for and about them, in that way.
