Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998) - Review

Since I have reviewed all of the other Phantasm sequels I suppose I will review this boring piece of shit as well.  This came out in the late 90's at a time when the horror genre had seen better days but was getting better with the releases of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.  I was just getting into the Phantasm series of movies and when I heard about this one I was beyond excited because the previous installments while I really enjoyed them always left me confused as shit and this one promised to explain it all.

Continuing right were part III left off, Michael (A Michael Baldwin) has been transformed and the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) has him right were he wants him.  The only thing is he does not want to kill him yet, he wants to show Michael the origin of everything.  How the Tall Man came to be and the meaning of what he has been doing this whole time.  Reggie (Reggie Bannister) is still hot on the case and is determined to save Michael but Michael no longer wants his help.  Jodie (Bill Thornbury) is still around to show Michael things but Jodie is not what he appears to be.  The end of the Phantasm series is here, what will happen to top it all off??

This movie definitely wasn't made to impress anyone.  The underwhelming effects, the shitty storyline and well all the actors were getting older and their performances showed it.  I did like the use of deleted footage from the original movie that was used that was actually pretty cool but that is the only comliment I am really going to give this sequel.

I was really excited for the story to finally be explained and I should have known that it would still leave me confused and saying what the fuck!  From beginning to end I really hated this movie.  I really wanted to like this movie and have some closure but part iv definitely leaves more questions than answers.  If you are a fan of the series well then you have to see it at least once but it's really not a likeable movie and you should keep your expectations super low.  Mine were way too high and I was kicking myself in the ass for spending 3.95 renting this from Blockbuster.  As always, stay twisted everyone!

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead 1994 - REVIEW

It's no secret to anyone that knows me that I am a HUGE fan of the Phantasm series.  For some reason part III has always escaped me.  Till recently I never really sat down and watched the whole movie all the way through.  Part of the reason I guess is that I really did not discover the series till the late 90's when the 4th installment was coming out and I started reading Fangoria magazine.  Fangoria seemed to praise the original in every issue it seemed, so I thought I would give it a shot.  It took me a few viewings of the original to really appreciate this as a great horror film.  The series itself is very odd and there are more "what the fuck" moments than most films like it but at the same time you can not find a creepier movie to watch.

Lord of the Dead picks up right were part II left off with Mike (A Michael Baldwin) and Liz (Paula Irvine) in the back of the hearse while Reggie (Reggie Bannister) is being attacked in the front seat.  The Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) ambushes them and kills Liz.  Mike and Reggie are surrounded by The Tall Man's minions and are about to meet their demise.  Mike is knocked unconscious and the Tall Man wants to take him.  Reggie prevents this by threatening to kill Michael.  The Tall Man does not like this as he says "I do not want him in pieces".  The Tall Man retreats and leaves them for the time being.  Reggie and Michael regroup for their journey to track him down again and finally stop him.  In the meantime they are jumped by a gang of survivors and bullies who take Reggie prisoner.  After this group meets their demise from a dangerous kid Tim (Kevin Conners) that is alone and guarding his house , the kid gets Reggie out of the trunk and teams up with him to find Michael again and The Tall Man.

I really liked the fact that they brought back the character of Jody (Bill Thornbury) from the original.  His character was always my favorite.  They also brought back the original Michael played by A Michael Baldwin.  If you remember in part II he was replaced by James Le Gros at the request of the production company and honestly I can see why.  I may be alone in thinking this but I preferred Le Gros over Baldwin.  Main reason being, well he is just a better actor in my opinion.  Nonetheless Baldwin did an OK job filling the role once again.  Last but not least who can forget Angus Scrimm with his portrayal of The Tall Man.  In my opinion he was as creepy and captivating as ever.

Don Coscarelli did a fantastic job with this movie and honestly it is my second favorite in the series.  I have heard this film catch a ton of critisizm over the years but I really don't see it.  I really liked the fact that they incorporated the spheres in the story a little more than the rest of the installments.  I love the spheres, they are the ultimate weapon that The Tall Man has.  The story itself was great.  It is much like the part II but not enough that you would say that they basically just did the same thing over again.  This story opens up a little more to finding out the secrets of The Tall Man.  Yet by the end I still found myself saying "what the fuck"!  Stay twisted everyone!

Bloody Bloody Bible Camp 2012 - REVIEW

I had heard alot of hype before I decided to pick up this new slasher. All positive reviews, people saying how much fun it was and how much they loved it. I mean Reggie Banister is in it, how could they go wrong. Well, to answer that question: alot can go wrong and not much gone right.

As we start in the year 1977 a group of Christians are spending a weekend at Happy Day Bible Camp. Very sleazy drug addict Christians I might add. All of this sin brings about a crazy nun named Sister Mary Chopper (Tim Sullivan) is there to put a stop to it all. The group is murdered by the axe wielding lunatic. We skip ahead 7 years later and another group has decided to make a weekend retreat at the camp. Led by Father Richard Cummings (Reggie Bannister). The legend of Mary Chopper is still talked about but nothing has happened in 7 years. Is she still around? Guess you will have to find out!

There really is not much to say in the synopsis of this film. The story is really not very elaborate. The film was given the 70's and 80's feel of a true slasher. Slashers usually do not have much of a storyline anyway. Hey, who needs good writers to make a movie? The truth of the matter is this is one of those movies that are so so bad that they are enjoyable. I expected so much more out of this. Maybe I built it up a little too much before I finally watched it.

The acting was so bad. Even Reggie was pretty horrible. His performance was really almost laughable. I don't think there was meant to be anything good about the acting or the deaths or the quality of the film. I am going to say it was meant to be as corny and just downright dumb as it looked. At least that's what I am hoping for. I do believe that if you would take the background story away from the killer it would have been a little better. As it stands it really just made it all that much more weirder. The death scenes could have used a little sprucing up as well. There are good deaths, then their are the deaths when you raise you eyebrows and say WHAT THE FUCK!

Despite my rambling on about this movie I really did enjoy myself. Because , well, I seem to like really bad movies. It does hold a certain amount of charm, and let's face it when Reggie Bannister is in a horror movie you need to see it whether its good or bad. I liked much of the humor in the movie because I went to a Catholic school and was around nuns alot. Not the nicest people you could meet. To see a killer nun and and alot of dirty Catholic humor makes me smile a little. Stay twisted everyone!
