Top 5 Horror Movies of 1981

1981 was a great year for horror movies.  There are so many great ones it really is hard pressed to pick just 5 of them.  I could probably do 10 or 15 but I like the challenge of narrowing down just 5.  I do really wish I was old enough at the time to see some of these great movies on the big screen but at 1 year old I guess it wasn't appropriate subject matter.

One of the many great slasher films to come out of the 80's and one that I watch regularly, especially around my birthday.  While I do love this film the reason that it is #5 is that I think the story is really good but there is a little bit too much of it and it drags at times.  Still it's always a fun watch with tons of great death scenes.

This one I really was not crazy about the first time I watched it.  I decided to give it another chance and really took a liking to it.  It really is not a good movie by any rights but is a good slasher for any die hard slasher movie fans.

The last 3 here really were difficult to put in order.  I love The Prowler and the main reason is the realistic effects and death scenes done by none other than the great Tom Savini.  The first time I ever saw this movie I really was amazed how real every death scene looked.

Instead of working on this movie Tom Savini decided to go another route and work on another slasher from 1981 that just missed this list entitled The Burning.  Still this is a stand out sequel and is the first introduction to Jason Vorhees as a killer wandering the woods of Crystal Lake avenging his mother's death.

John Carpenter the master comes back to direct the sequel that in my opinion is the best in the franchise.  After being shot 6 times by Dr Loomis (Donald Pleasence) Michael is still on the loose in Haddonfield hellbent to find his sister and kill her.

Haunter 2013 - REVIEW

We all know there is no shortage of haunted house movies in the horror world. We've seen it all from The Amityville Horror to Paranormal Activity (its sequels and spoofs) to Sinister and on and on. It's a never ending cycle. Personally, I'm not a big fan of paranormal films but I've certainly seen my share of good ones and abhorrently bad ones. Unfortunately, in my experience the bad outweigh the good.

Lisa (Abigail Breslin) is your average rebellious teenage girl... well not really your "average" teenager. You see, she and her entire family are dead. Trapped for eternity, in a house surrounded by a menacing fog, with her parents (Peter Outerbridge and Michelle Nolden) and brother (Peter DaCunha). As if that weren't bad enough, they're all forced to relive the same day over and over again. Did I forget to mention the menacing spirit (Stephen McHattie), known only as The Pale Man, determined to keep their souls contained in the house. Lisa must not only convince the rest of her family that they're dead but she is also challenged with finding out why. It is during this search that she discovers she is connected to the world of the living. By touching objects, she is able to channel herself into that world (present day) through young Olivia (Elanor Zichy), who now lives in the house with her family. Dead and alone, Lisa is challenged with saving the souls of her family and lives of the people now living in the house.

As you would expect, there are some outstanding performances in this movie. Breslin is beautifully compelling as Lisa. And if you're not aware of my love for McHattie, then you haven't been following for very long. He's a brilliant character actor and always a force to be reckoned with on screen giving no less than 100% at all times. There are great performances from Outerbridge and Nolden as Lisa's oblivious parents. An all around superior cast, needed to tell such an intricate story.

Haunter plays like a mix between Groundhog Day, The Others and The Amityville Horror. Director Vincenzo Natali brings life to this well written and complex story with the help of some beautiful cinematography by Jon Jofflin. Haunter is a slow burn horror that reveals itself a little at a time and comes together quite nicely in the end. If all paranormal films were like this one, I might be enticed to watch them more often. I would recommend this one to fans of the paranormal sub-genre. It's currently available on Netflix and Amazon instant.

Nobody Can Cool 2013 - REVIEW

Most of us like to think that there are only two categories for films... you either like them or you don't. In my experience, few films fall into that gray area. You wanna like it but there's just something missing. Or you don't like it but there's that one little spark in an otherwise dreary film.

Susan (Catherine Annette) and David (David Atlas) are a bickering young couple off on a weekend getaway to a remote cabin to no doubt strengthen their dwindling relationship. Upon arrival they discover that the cabin is already occupied by a seemingly odd couple, Len (Nick Principe) and Gigi (Nikki Bohm). After an awkward introduction, the two couples reluctantly decide to share the cabin for the night. Tensions ramp up when Susan hears is awakened by the sound of a car starting. Thinking their car is being stolen, she jolts out of bed only to find they've been locked in. As the true nature of their captors become evident, Susan and David are left to fight for their lives. Who will make it out alive?

The acting in this is about what you'd expect from a mostly green cast. The performances often come off as a bit wooden with the exception of one... Nick Principe. What is clearly a breakthrough role for him, Principe did a stellar job of bringing Len's creepy, cool and often charming personality through. He is by far the stand out in Nobody Can Cool and it's about time that his talents are highlighted in such a way. Haris Mahic, who shows up towards the end of the film as Mo, surprised me as well. I had the feeling that I'd seen in something before but after going over his IMDb, I'm not so sure anymore. In any case, for the little bit of screen time he got, he did rather well.

Ultimately, the first production from directing team known as DPYX (Marcy Boyle and Rachel Holzman) is one of those films that falls in the gray area for me. It has it's good points, camera direction, lighting and atmosphere. They're successful in their use of location and small cast, creating a setting where the tension is bound to boil over. At the same time, that setting doesn't seem to be nurtured enough to actually reach that boiling point. The duo drop their characters in this dangerously volatile situation without giving them the common sense to make even one good decision. There's little in the way of character development which makes it hard for viewers to root for anyone. In the end, Nobody Can Cool is worth a watch. Don't go into it expecting anything horrific and gory as there is little in the way of it.
