Severin Films Releases Artwork for Lost Soul - The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau

Lost Soul - The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau is a documentary feature will have its world premiere this Sunday, August 24th at the London Frightfest, followed by festival engagements at The Oldenburg Film Festival in Germany and Festival De L’Etrange in Paris. More festival dates, including North America, will be announced soon via the Severin Films Facebook page.

The filming of the ill-fated 1996 version of H. G. Welles’ THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU is the stuff of legend. For the first time since he was unceremoniously escorted off his longtime dream project, Richard (HARDWARE) Stanley reveals in detail his spectacular original vision and how it was all ripped apart at the seams. Cast members including Fairuza Balk, Marco Hofschneider and Rob Morrow, executives and producers Robert Shaye, Edward R. Pressman and Tim Zinnemann, concept artist Graham Humphreys, members of the Stan Winston Makeup Effects team as well as a host of cast and crew members recall the stories first hand of colossal egos run amok, a production way out of control, and how the original filmmaker was banished from the set but wouldn't let go. Directed by David Gregory (PLAGUE TOWN, THEATRE BIZARRE, GODFATHERS OF MONDO, THE JOE SPINELL STORY), this is the sensational story of what could have been a science fiction masterpiece which became a huge creative and financial disaster; the story of the outsider artist versus Hollywood machine.

Principal Photography Begins on Night of the Living Dead: Rebirth

OH, 8/25/14 - Ohio native and former Chill comic relief Roger Conners has rolled camera and officially moved into principal photography on his directorial debut, Night of the Living Dead: Rebirth. Conners has appeared in over a dozen independent productions with half them being horror titles, and his love for the genre was first kickstarted after his initial viewing of the original George Romero zombie classic, Night of the Living Dead (1968). "The original Night is considered a groundbreaking piece of cinema not only for the impact it had on the modern day horror film, but because of its amazing depiction of the prevalent issues that the American public were faced with at that time," Roger explains. "Topics such as racism, government involvement and cover ups, the exposure of violence through television and media, these are all undertones that are touched on in the original film."

In the last decade Night of the Living Dead has been the recipient of four remakes. Two of the original sequels - Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead - have even received the remake treatment. In an age where horror plots are recycled and slapped together with the cheapest of glues, it's important for zombie fans to know that - yes, Night of the Living Dead: Rebirth is a "re-visionment" or remake, but Director Conners aims to take the original narrative style of the Romero franchise and give it a more socio-political twist. Taking Rebirth just a step further than other re-installments will set it away from the pack. Roger mentions his film’s distinguishing qualities, "I feel that many of the current depictions of Night have overlooked the fact that, at the time it was released, the piece was so much more than an Avant-guard horror film. Our goal is to acknowledge all of the elements that made it so pivotal, and that's what I feel will set us apart from the rest."

Roger Conners is known throughout the independent horror film industry for his frequent portrayal of homosexual characters, an archetype that is often ignored in the genre dealing with blood, boobs, and guts. His cheeky and often flamboyant characters have left the actor with the affectionately dubbed title, The Scream Queer. In this regard, the aspiring director will swap certain stereotypes for others to give the movie a more modern feel. "Our goal with Rebirth isn't so much to remake a classic zombie film, but to honor the masterpiece as a truly important portrayal of our culture at that time. The topics addressed within the original film are still acknowledged along with more relevant concerns such as homosexuality and religious irrationality and violence," Conners finishes before heading back to his production notes.

“What begins as an annual visit to their family gravesite quickly becomes a night of sheer terror as two brothers are unexpectedly forced to fight back against a sudden onslaught of violent assailants. Soon, eight complete strangers find themselves barricaded inside a rural farmhouse in an attempt to survive against the ever-growing army of murderous creatures outside.”

Night of the Living Dead: Rebirth is filming around Ohio based on the script by Conners. Noelle Bye, another former Chill crew member, will work as cinematographer and Ron George, Cassaundra Holloway and GD Effects will be handling the special effects. Confirmed cast members include Roger Conners as Adam, Aswan Harris as Ben, Alvin Hudson as Reverend Harold Cooper, Rachel Anderson as Helen Cooper, RJ Messenger as Johnny, Robbie Barnes as Sarah Chambers, Brad Arner as Tom, Dan Peters as Vince, Benny Benzino as Russo, John Chiara as Ricci, Taylor Nelms as Judy, and Rick Montgomery as George.

Night of the Living Dead: Rebirth is due to be released in late 2015.

Top 5 Horror Films of 1986

We are now entering the late 80's which just so happens to be one of my favorite.  1986 is where the slasher films are starting to make a small comeback, and Jason returns from the dead for the first time.  This is also the year that holds my favorite horror movie of all time.

April Fools Day is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.  I just watched it this past Sunday as a matter of fact.  Not meant to be scary or even taken seriously just a great dark comedy with a fantastic cast.  Including former Friday the 13th alum Amy Steel.

There are probably alot of people who are not going to agree with this pick but I really do love this movie.  He may have been one of the hardest actors to work with on this film but Klaus Kinski is brilliant as tenant landlord and former MD Karl Gunther.

I just saw this movie not too long ago but it has easily become on of my favorite movies to watch.  The fun factor in this movie is through the roof and probably my favorite movie that stars Tom "Thrill Me" Adkins

This year has been a big year for Blu Ray releases thanks to Scream Factory.  Finally getting the blu ray treatment it deserves.  Tawny Kitaen really is a horrible actress but it doesn't take away from the greatness that is Witchboard.  The sequel Witchboard 2 also got a Blu Ray release this year but we will be talking about this one in the 90's.

Here is it my favorite movie of all time Friday the 13th Part VI.  I could not get enough of this movie when I was younger and that hasn't changed over the years.  The first film when Jason actually raises from the dead and becomes a zombie.  The mixture of Jason and dark humor in this film made it great.

"Gory Graduation" to Begin Production in 2015

Way back when, say the late `90s or the early stages of the 21st
century, the IMDb was an unreliable film narrator of sorts; even moreso
than it is today (thankfully, the IMDb has tightened ship, as it were,
on user submissions). One such piece of film history that only true
die-hards of the slasher movie sub-genre may know about or, even
remember, is a little movie called Gory Graduation.

Starring Lesleh Donaldson (Curtains, Happy Birthday To Me) and a few
other memorable scream queens from the early `80s, a plot description
was non-existent as was any crew information. The film languished in
obscurity. So obscure was it, actually, that it never really existed.

Until now.

“I can remember spending years searching for any information on this
elusive title, being then as much of a slasher completist as I am today
and getting absolutely nowhere,” remarks Joseph Henson, director of Gory
Graduation. “I thought to myself, here is a film, with such a
provocative title, that NEEDS to be made.”

Of course, through the advent of social media, enough information was
finally unearthed to determine the film was nothing more than a fake
title stirred up by someone who, like Henson, probably wanted to make it
but never did. The title was eventually removed from the IMDb and that
was that. But boy, if you were active during the golden years of the
alt.horror newsgroup or the birth of now-infamous horror sites, you
remember the stir that was caused by this elusive title that was nothing
more than fakery.

Of course, Henson and cohort Nathan Johnson (who co-wrote and
co-directed The Night Before Easter with Henson) would promise
themselves time and time again they’d eventually make their very own
slasher one day (they are two of the biggest fans of the sub-genre
possible, even being half of the wildly popular all-slasher podcast, The
Hysteria Continues) even though they knew next to nothing about actual
film making. They finally got their chance to make their own slasher
with The Night Before Easter (2014), an exceptionally low-budget effort
shot on a Canon T3i with little else in the way of equipment or budget.
“The Night Before Easter, as clunky as it is, was a massive learning
experience for us. Since wrapping that movie, I’ve spent hours upon
hours, days upon days, and weeks turning into months soaking up
knowledge on film making. How to stage scenes, internal camera settings,
sound design, et al. We couldn’t afford to do a lot of things on The
Night Before Easter but we plan to take what we’ve learned from that
experience, on top of a much higher budget (a five figure budget we are
working on raising) and going from clunk to spunk, as it were,” notes
Henson.

“I’m proud of The Night Before Easter all things considered,” says
Henson, “…but with Gory Graduation, we really want to up the stakes
internally and externally – if The Night Before Easter was sub-Roger
Corman, we hope Gory Graduation will be sub-Argento in style, fluidity
and consistency.”

The plot concerns a graduation ceremony that becomes the stomping
grounds for a killer decked out in ceremonial robes. It is, at its core,
a no-nonsense slasher film with a massive bodycount and lots of gore,
nudity and, above all, likable characters.

Gory Graduation is currently being casted and Henson and Johnson are, on
top of scripting, raising a budget to purchase more equipment and to
hire a much larger cast/crew (including a few known names with whom
negotiations are underway).

“I feel that The Night Before Easter was a trial run, a get your feet
wet sort of thing. I had a rudimentary knowledge of editing and went in
knowing nothing else. Nathan and I were essentially two guys throwing
something together with little money and very few resources, but all
things considered, we think we made… Something. With Gory Graduation,
we’re going to erase the mistakes we made and triple the stuff that
worked,” Henson concludes.

You can follow Gory Graduation on Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/Gory.Graduation and on Twitter:
https://twitter.com/GoryGraduation

The film is slated to begin production in 2015 and will see a release in
2016.

Production Begins on Herschell Gordon Lewis's BloodMania

Monday, August 4th, 2014 - Production begins today on a new major horror movie, entitled “Herschell Gordon Lewis’s BloodMania.” Acclaimed horror genre director Herschell Gordon Lewis will co-direct the project, which is being produced by HGB Entertainment Ltd. for Diabolique Films, the film division of the premiere horror publication, Diabolique Magazine. Mr. Lewis is internationally recognized as the originator of the contemporary splatter film, and he chuckles at being dubbed “The Godfather of Gore."

The Producer of the film is Diabolique Films executive James Saito, and the film is being shot in its entirety in Calgary, Alberta Canada. Lewis explained his “co-director” role, an unusual relationship with the production company: “BloodMania is a series of four episodes, each one unique. I’ll personally direct two, and Benjamin Ross Hayden (Agophobia, 2013) and Kevin Littlelight the others. So I can promise a variety of ‘flavors to satisfy even the most ardent horror fans!’”

Asked whether “BloodMania” will be a step beyond any film either he or anyone has directed before, the answer was as expected from this maverick director: “What do you think?” A major factor contributing to his reputation in the film industry is Herschell Gordon Lewis’s insistence on never repeating a theme. “BloodMania” he promises, will set a new standard for, as he so eloquently puts it, “off-the-wall outrage, doused in a wild sense of humor!”

Producer James Saito has assembled a cast of well-known Canadian actors and actresses, as well as crew highly skilled in special effects. “Enthusiasm is extraordinarily high,” he reports, “and much of that enthusiasm is the happy anticipation that our effects team will have the opportunity to participate in a motion picture whose potential is truly world-class. BloodMania is our gift to Mr. Lewis’ many fans and all fans of the horror genre.”

Top 5 Horror Films of 1985

We continue with our list of the top horror films of 1985.  Before I sat down and wrote this I was thinking what movies I would include and did not think I could fill 5 slots.  I am able to do that but 1985 wasn't a great year for horror.  While there were some standout films there was nothing huge like in the early 80s.  The slasher craze was fizzling out and one horror franchise was taking a dangerous turn that would be a success or total failure.

This film is really a goofy zombie flick but it is one hell of a fun film.  It has a great cast including James Karen, Clu Gulager, Thom Matthews and Linnea Quigley. With a cast like that how could you not love it ?

This installment of Friday often splits the fans right down the middle.  I have heard people say it was the worst and people say it was the best.  I don't think it is either best or worst but I do love this film.  It's true that Jason really isn't Jason and the cast isn't as likable as other installments but still a good slasher.

I actually did not see Fright Night till probably 2 years ago after I heard what a great film it was.  I have to agree it really is a great film.  A fun cast and Chris Sarandon plays an excellent vampire.

The first horror convention I ever went to was a Re-Animator reunion and I had never seen the movie before so I really wasn't interested in it.  A few weeks later I purchased the film and gave it a watch and it quickly became one of my frequent watches.  Unlike an zombie flick you have ever seen.

This is another one that has fans of a franchise split down the middle.  I think this movie was great.  It is not my favorite in the series but it really is a fun movie.  This was before Freddy talked alot, and had funny taglines.  Freddy was just creepy as fuck and loved to terrorize people.  Also look at the artwork for this cover.  What happened to movie poster artwork like this?
