Deadly Revisions 2013 - REVIEW

For a couple of years now, we here at TC have been posting press releases and updates on the debut film from writer/director Gregory Blair. The synopsis and outline of the film was always interesting to me plus it stars one of my personal favorites, Bill Oberst Jr. so I was pretty excited for this one. I've been binge watching Supernatural for the past month so I kinda needed something different.

Grafton Torn (Bill Oberst Jr.) is a successful horror writer who has just awakened from a coma with no memory of what happened. Things take an ugly turn when he decides to spend some time alone at his friend Deter's (Mikhail Blokh) secluded cabin. When his doctor suggests that he see a hypnotherapist  to try and recover his memory, Grafton begins seeing Dr. Ally Morris (Cindy Merrill). Each session brings out more and more memories that only pose more questions than answers leaving him in a life and death struggle to figure out what is real and what isn't.

Oberst gives a great performance as a man teetering on the edge of insanity (no, I'm not just saying that). This is the first time I've seen him go from one extreme to the other and he managed to play both parts AND the transition between the two with ease. And let's face it, acting ain't easy or we'd all be doing it. There are also some good performances from Blokh and Merrill. When a film lies so heavily on such a small cast, it's important to have actors that can carry their weight.

The story is a good one and it's well written. A twisted mind bender that zigs and zags until the end and just when you think you have it all figured out, ya don't. Blair throws in one plot twist after another but still manages to make it come full circle. It does start off a little slow but Blair manages to maintain the level of tension throughout. There's not much in the way of blood and gore but the film doesn't need it to convey the point. Being that this is Blair's first time writing and directing, I'd say he's got more promise than most and I look forward to seeing more of his work in the future.

Of course, it's not without it's rough spots. Some of the scenes were a little dark for my taste and the lighting in a few of them was a bit rough but neither were so distracting that it took away from the overall film. Definitely worth a watch.

Son of Ghostman 2013 - REVIEW

Today this movie Son Of Ghostman comes across my desk, in my email really, and right off the bat the sender of this email explains how this is NOT a horror movie but a romantic comedy.  Are you serious?  I am a horror writer and you want me to watch a Rom Com? Fuck!! This film has been reviewed by 15+ horror websites and gotten positive reviews.  What the hell.  What is the worst that can happen?  Let's just hope a vagina does not start to grow on my head.

A recently dumped and unemployed man, Denny (Devin Ordoyne),  in his 30s decides to moonlight as the 'son' of his childhood hero, a bygone local celebrity Horror Host named Ghostman (Daniel McCann). When his videos go viral, he must settle an old score with a high school rival and figure out where his life is headed, all while keeping his identity secret from a new woman in town he's fallen for (Angela Gulner). (Courtesy of IMDB)

After my opening I have to explain that his movie has more to do with horror than it leads on to be.  I really enjoyed this film.  It was funny, smart and has a pretty solid cast of talented actors.  None of which are a name right now but I would not be surprised to see a few of them pop us someday.  I especially liked the role of the main character Denny played by Devin Ordoyne.  He really shined in this movie and brought a mixture of horror, comedy and drama to the table.  Seriously if you go into this thinking you will not like it you will be pleasantly surprised as I was.

I guess now comes the part when I give this movie a rating.  Hmmmm!  I can't hold it to the same standard as most movies that I review on here because it's not a traditional horror movie.  I would still rate this 7 out of 10 stars.  I really deserves high marks and the writing in this film I'm sure you all will agree is very clever.  I would like to offer some advice to the character of Denny though.  Watch out for the Ginger's, it is said they have no souls.  :) Really hoping my girlfriend doesn't read this review.  Stay twisted everyone!!

Top 5 Horror Films of 1984

As I look through the list of 1984, it was really not a big year for horror movies but 1984 was not boring at all.  This is the year for some big horror blockbusters.  Real classics that made the genre what it is today.  Let's see what we got, shall we?

I just saw this recently for the first time.  Not really so much scary as just cheesy 80's awesomeness.  It was good enough to make #5 on the list.

A Stephen King book turned to the big screen with a bunch of creepy fuckin kids who are out to kill all the adults in Gatlin.  Oh yea, Linda Hamilton is in this one too!!

Love or hate this movie, it is one of the better Friday sequels.  Certainly not the best but Ted White did an excellent job of playing the larger more destructive Jason and a young Corey Feldman that was pretty alright as well.  While Kimberly Beck was no Amy Steel as a final girl she was a hell of a lot better than Dana Kimmell.  As much as I like Part III I still have to admit Dana was pretty awful.

My absolute favorite movie to watch around the holiday season.  This film really is a slasher film in every way.  Unfortunately it was picketed by the PTA so bad that it only lasted a couple of weeks in the theaters and not getting a release on VHS till some time after.

Of course this was going to be #1 on the list.  The first big hit released by New Line Cinema and another masterpiece in horror for Wes Craven.  Introducing everyone to Freddy Krueger played by Roger Englund and his glove of blades.

NEW YORK – April 10, 2014 – Linda Hamilton joins the season two cast of Syfy’s highly-rated and groundbreaking drama series, Defiance, in the recurring guest role of Pilar, the mysterious and long-separated wife of Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene). Premiering its second season on Thursday, June 19 at 8PM ET/PT, the ambitious series delivered an average of 1.5 million viewers 18-49 and 3.2 million total viewers in its first season, based on Live +7 data.

Hamilton will play the key recurring role of Pilar McCawley, the wife of Rafe McCawley (Graham Greene) and mother to their three children. Separated from her family for a number of years, Pilar has now returned home. Pilar suffered from serious mental illness and in the aftermath of the Votan arrival and subsequent war, did not have access to her medication. With her mental state unchecked, Pilar snapped and tried to murder her children. Fearing for the family’s safety, Rafe sent her to an institution and told their children she had died. Now Pilar is back with both a steely resolve and a warm, maternal love for her family. But the motives for her return are unclear, and soon Rafe and others in town begin to question where she’s actually been these past years.

Trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, Hamilton triumphed in her breakout role as the iconic Sarah Conner in James Cameron’s action/sci-fi masterpiece The Terminator, followed by the blockbuster sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day. She is also well-known for her popular role on the television series Beauty and the Beast opposite Ron Perlman. Her additional film credits include Mr. Destiny, Silent Fall and Dante’s Peak.

Hamilton joins the previously announced James Murray, William Atherton and Anna Hopkins as new cast additions to season two of the series. As the story of Defiance resumes, the lives of the townspeople are in drastic turmoil. The Earth Republic has assumed control of the town, with far-reaching consequences including a new mayor. Nolan traverses the badlands to find a lost Irisa, Amanda has an unexpected new role in the town as she searches for Kenya and the Tarr family desperately tries to keep control of their criminal empire in the midst of dramatic changes.

Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica) resumes his role as executive producer and showrunner. Smallville’s Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin return as executive producers for season two and Michael Taylor serves as consulting producer. Michael Nankin (co-executive producer) is set to direct the season two opener. Defiance is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

Defiance is an unprecedented partnership between Syfy and Trion Worlds and the first-ever convergence of television and online gaming, featuring an interconnected world and storylines that co-exist on both platforms.

Teaser Trailer Released for Deadly Revisions

Apr. 9, 2014 - LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Film fans can now get a sneak peek of writer/director Gregory Blair’s “DEADLY REVISIONS” with the teaser trailer released this week. Tight and tense, the teaser is reveals just enough to get audiences ready for Blair’s unique blend of psychological thriller and horror film.

Emmy Award winning horror movie favorite Bill Oberst, Jr. appears as Grafton Torn— an amnesiac horror film writer for whom hypnotherapy and nightmares reveal terrifying images that just can’t be real. Or can they? With an unreliable narrator, the audience has to keep reevaluating the information they get as the slow burn script piles on increasingly unexpected plot twists. In "DEADLY REVISIONS", remembering can be murder!

A valentine to the horror genre, the film provides all the spooky staples fans adore: dark passageways, creaking floorboards and things lurking in the shadows. At the same time, there are also loving winks to masters such as Brian DePalma, Sam Raimi and Alfred Hitchcock. Through the combination of these elements, as our hero examines his past, the film also examines the art of the horror film itself and its own value as a fun and safe place to confront our fears.

The film has already garnered Blair the EOTM Award for “Best Director of an Indie Horror Film” and reviewers have lauded it as “Amazing” (Chris Mackey, GuestStars Blog) and “Mind Blowing” (Char Hardin, Charred Remains Blogpost).

He makes the announcement after fielding questions about Hollywood's reliance on superhero movies. When asked if he'd return to the genre he helped create with 1978's Superman, he says, "If you call The Goonies a comic book."

Syfy Announces New Zombie Series: Z Nation

NEW YORK – April 7, 2014 – Syfy today announced Z Nation, a 13-episode zombie series set to debut in the fall. From production company The Asylum (Sharknado), the action-horror series depicts the epic struggle to save humanity after a zombie apocalypse. The series, which will air on Syfy, will be produced by The Asylum and sold internationally by Dynamic Television.

Karl Schaefer (Eerie Indiana, The Dead Zone) will serve as executive producer and showrunner. "Z Nation will take viewers where no zombie has gone before,” says Schaefer. The show, he continues, adds “a sense of hope to the horror of the apocalypse – our everyday heroes take the fight to the zombies. It’ll be an epic journey unlike anything you've seen before.”

In making the announcement, Chris Regina, Senior Vice President, Programming, Syfy, said: “Z Nation is a unique new journey into the long established zombie genre. Instead of existential despair, the series offers hope that somehow, some way, humanity will not only survive, but triumph. In producing their first ever weekly series, our long-time partners The Asylum have created a different way of telling an iconic story.”

In Z Nation, three years have passed since the zombie virus has gutted the country, and a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood. Although the antibodies he carries are the world’s last, best hope for a vaccine, he hides a dark secret that threatens them all. With humankind’s survival at stake, the ragtag band embarks on a journey of survival across three thousand miles of rusted-out post-apocalyptic America.

Z Nation is a dynamic ensemble drama that will plunge viewers into a fully-imagined post-zombie America and take them on an adventure with a diverse group of richly-drawn characters. As the reluctant heroes learn to work as a team and battle ever-more-menacing zombies, their flaws, idiosyncrasies, and moral dilemmas will ultimately become the heart of the show.

Helenna Santos Leads The Infected

Los Angeles - Writer/Director Barry Morgan’s (Arcana) new short horror film The Infected wrapped principal photography in Los Angeles last week and stars Filipino American actress Helenna Santos (American Reunion, Black Box TV), who also produced the film with Morgan.

The plot of The Infected is as follows:

“Four friends meet to celebrate their college graduation when a dirty bomb containing a highly contagious and lethal virus explodes in Los Angeles. Quarantined together in a tiny apartment they pass the time with drugs, sex, and alcohol. As the effects of the virus begin to set in, a sickness invades their bodies, and they all turn on one another in a battle to survive. Little do they know, the plague outside the front door is nowhere near as strong as the illness they've created inside.”

While The Infected fits squarely in the horror genre, it has one important difference. The lead character is a visible minority. As Morgan states: “We never even thought about the fact that Helenna is a visible minority. It was only after we wrapped and started discussing our plans for the project that we realized how much of an anomaly it is to have a lead actress who isn’t Caucasian in a North American made horror film."

Santos added: “The entertainment industry has a long way to go in properly representing our cultural landscape. It’s really shocking to me that in the horror genre we could only think of a handful of women who play the lead role and are visible minorities. I'm Filipino/Russian/German and often get shoved into the 'other' category when it comes to casting. I was very excited about producing and acting in this project from the beginning, but even more so now that we are able to shed light on the fact that visible minorities can be more than just a stereotype or a supporting character.”

The Infected also stars Jerod Meagher (ABCs of Death 2, Guys Reading Poems), Austin Hillebrecht (Grimm, Arcana) and Melissa Katzin (The Forgotten), and is now in development as a feature film based on the short.

Texas Frightmare Weekend 2014

With Texas Frightmare Weekend literally just weeks away, there will be no shortage of things for convention goers to do. Let's go through some of them, shall we?

This year is full of the most "reunions" I've ever seen at one time. From Repo! The Genetic Opera to the 60th anniversary reunion of The Creature From the Black Lagoon, there will be plenty of things to do and people to see.

Fans of Aliens will no doubt enjoy the reunion of some of their favorite Marines including Mark Rolston, Jenette Goldstein and Michael Biehn. Speaking of Michael Biehn, did I mention there is a Terminator reunion? No? Well there is! Familiar faces from three of the action/sci-fi films will be in attendance. But wait, there's more! Children of the Corn, Night of the Demons and even a CENOBYTE REUNION! I could keep going but I'm a little overwhelmed at the moment.

More announcements are coming and if you're registered to receive email alerts, you'll get them first!! Follow this link to sign up today.
