SyFy's Helix Begins Production in Canada

July 31, 2013 – Syfy’s newest original scripted series Helix from Sony Pictures Television began production this past weekend in Montreal, Canada. The 13-episode drama is executive produced by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander), Steven Maeda (Lost, The X-Files) who is also showrunner, and Lynda Obst (Sleepless in Seattle, Contact). Cameron Porsandeh, who wrote the pilot, will serve as a Co-Executive Producer.

Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that may hold the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation. However, the lethal threat is just the tip of the iceberg, and as the virus evolves, the chilling truth begins to unravel.

Billy Campbell (The Killing, Killing Lincoln) stars as Dr. Alan Farragut, leader of the Centers for Disease Control outbreak field team called upon to investigate and control a potential “hot zone” at a remote Arctic research facility. Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, 47 Ronin) also stars as Dr. Hiroshi Hataki, director of the outpost and its mysterious viral research program.

Helix also stars Kyra Zagorsky (Soldiers of the Apocalypse) as Dr. Julia Walker, Mark Ghanimé (Emily Owens, M.D.) as Major Sergio Balleseros, Jordan Hayes (House at the End of the Street) as Dr. Sarah Jordan, Meegwun Fairbrother as Daniel Aerov, Catherine Lemieux (White House Down) as Dr. Doreen Boyle and Neil Napier (Riddick) as Dr. Peter Farragut.

Prolific director and producer Jeffrey Reiner is directing the premiere episode of Helix. Reiner directed multiple episodes of notable television series such as the critically acclaimed and award-winning Friday Night Lights, Awake and The Event. Reiner previously worked with Syfy directing the 90-minute pilot of the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica.

Helix is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Kaji Productions and Lynda Obst Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

In a Face Off first, Season 5 features eight contestants from past seasons who will battle eight newcomers. Eager for a chance at redemption, the eight returning contestants are: Alana Rose Schiro from New York; Tate Steinsiek from Henryetta, OK; Eric Zapata from Victoria, TX; Frank Ippolito from Cleveland; Laura Tyler from Orlando; Miranda Jory from Seattle; RJ Haddy from Charleston, WV, and Roy Wooley from Tucker, GA. Love Sick Love 2012 - REVIEW

Life has thrown me some curve balls lately, as it often does, so I've fallen pretty far behind on reviews and on movie watching in general. I'm doing my best to catch up so just hang in there with me and we'll get back to normal pretty soon, well as normal as we get around here at Twisted Central.

Dori (Katia Winter) wants nothing more than to be with Norman (Matthew Settle) a commitment phobic business man who's only interested in one thing. After getting some relationship tips from a book she decides to get Norman alone in an isolated country house so she can profess her undying love. When he doesn't reciprocate, she forces him to live through every holiday of the year, in one weekend, to prove they are the perfect couple. With no help in sight, Norman struggles to free himself from the chains that bind him, literally, before what started as a romantic weekend alone turns into something much darker and sadistic.

If you take the films Fatal Attraction, Misery and The Loved Ones and mix them all together, you'll end up with something probably a lot more interesting than Love Sick Love. What started out as a seemingly character driven story, falls flat pretty quickly. The things that made the characters interesting in the beginning got lost somewhere on their drive to the country, I guess. I'm not really sure. While I can see the direction that this film was trying to take, it just never got there. I have no doubt their intentions were good but  writer Ryan Oxford and director Christian Charles simply tried to do too much. The premise is easy enough... a pissed off woman seeks revenge on the man that wronged her... but with each plot point/twist the entire story just caved in on itself and it became a muddled mess. What it lacked in tension, it made up for in predictability.

The cast did the best they could with the script they were given but at times it seemed that even they were growing weary of ridiculous dialogue they were forced to deliver and the even more ridiculous situations their characters were thrust into. There wasn't a single moment in the entire film that I took any of the characters seriously. I didn't buy Winter as a psycho nut job who takes men out to the country to "make" them love her. I didn't find Dori menacing or scary or diabolical in any way. Settle somewhat passes for a sex crazed business man but can you really feel sorry for a man like that? I didn't. I actually had a hard time liking ANY of these people.

Ultimately, I'm not even sure how to categorize Love Sick Love. There's very little in the way of blood and gore so it's definitely not horror. To call it a thriller would be stretching it. It takes a couple of stabs at being a dark comedy but pretty much fails to find that niche too. If you're in the mood to watch a film about a vindictive woman, I'd suggest looking up the aforementioned films. This one is likely to leave you questioning why you even bothered wasting the energy to put it in the DVD player or your time watching it.

Jessica Cameron Joins the Cast of Pearry Teo's Bedlam Stories

Director Pearry Teo’s (Necromentia, The Gene Generation, and the upcoming The Dark Prince) newest twisted horror movie has added a seasoned indie veteran to their cast, Scream Queen Jessica Cameron.

The story of the film is as follows:
Set in the 1920s, intrepid reporter Nelly Bly fakes insanity to gain admission into the infamous Bedlam Asylum. While researching her expose, Nellie meets a young patient, Dorothy, who has delusions of a fantasy land she calls “Oz.” Digging deeper into the dark history of the asylum, Nellie uncovers evidence of human experimentation on another inmate, a young girl named Alice, who’s “Wonderland” mirrored Dorothy’s imaginary world. Nellie is determined not to let Dorothy share Alice’s fate as a human guinea pig. But the horrific experiments open a portal to these other worlds. When the dark and twisted inhabitants of Oz and Wonderland clash for control, Nellie realizes that they aren't delusions at all - they are terrifyingly real.

Cameron is known for the SyFy channel, Roger Corman film Camel Spiders, Steven C. Miller’s excellent remake Silent Night, the much talked about Mr. Hush, and will next be seen in her directorial debut, Truth or Dare. She is going to play the role of “Nurse Tilley.” While information about the film and it’s characters is limited, we do know that Nurse Tilley is “The last kind face you will see, but her eyes hint that she knows about the dark secrets and practices within the walls of Bedlam Asylum.”

Cameron joins the cast with actress Anna Harr who will be playing the titular role of Alice. Bedlam Stories is being produced under Pearry Teo’s company, Teo/Ward Productions and the film’s companion novel is to be released on September 15th of this year. Fatal Pictures Announces Their Final Short Film: Heir

From Richard Powell and Zach Green’s Fatal Pictures, the company that brought you the critically acclaimed, award winning horror shorts WORM and FAMILIAR, comes their new and final short film “HEIR”, a touching tale of father and son. Starring the Emmy award winning Bill Oberst Jr. (ABRAHAM LINCOLN VS. ZOMBIES, TAKE THIS LOLLIPOP, CHILDREN OF SORROW) and Robert Nolan (SICK, WORM, FAMILIAR).

Synopsis:
After connecting with a stranger of similar interests online, family man Gordon and his son Paul, embark on an ill-fated road trip in which Gordon aims to indulge in a secret passion. Before the day ends a horrible truth will be uncovered and a harsh lesson will be learned.

Combining the best and brightest of our previous film, FAMILIAR, with new and accomplished collaborators (BILL OBERST JR, MARC ROUSSEL and RON
BASCH from Red Sneakers Media), HEIR is set to be a disturbing, practical FX driven horror short which examines one of societies darkest taboos in a way only Fatal Pictures can. HEIR stands to be our darkest, sharpest and most successful film to date!

Credits:
Written and Directed by Richard Powell
Produced by Zach Green, Marc Roussel, Ron Basch and Richard Powell
Produced in association with Red Sneakers Media (REMOTE & THE SWEETEST HIPPOPOTAMUS - both Director’s Guild of Canada nominees for Best Short
Film)
Associate Producer Heather Wixson (Founder CINEMAYHEM FILM FESTIVAL, Journalist DREAD CENTRAL)
Special Effects by The Butcher Shop (FAMILIAR, DEVIL’S NIGHT)
Cinematography by Michael Davidson (SICK, FAMILIAR, BERKSHIRE COUNTY)
Editing by John Nicholls (SEX AFTER KIDS, THE SWEETEST HIPPOPOTAMUS)
Music & Sound Design by Bernie Greenspoon (CONSUMPTION, WORM, FAMILIAR)

Quotes:
Unlike many films seeking the support of filmmakers and film lovers across the various crowd-funding platforms, we felt it appropriate to seek out and obtain some feedback and insights on the HEIR screenplay first in order to reassure potential supporters that we have the goods! Below are a few of the supportive and enthusiastic comments from a cross-section of the horror community including critics, festival directors, distributors and cult horror actor Bill Oberst Jr. himself.
"HEIR promises to deliver a disgusting dose of Lovecraftian body-horror that will make you squirm in more ways than one!"
- Jason Thorson, (Editor-in-chief, RavenousMonster.com)

"Considering Familiar, its last work, I would say that Fatal Pictures will definitely bring us, with Heir, a must-see short film. Graphically shocking and original with its body modifications, i would bet it'll be a great masterpiece. The horror in its very best form: disturbing and unique."
- Nicolas Tonsho, Fantaspoa International Film Festival

"A monstrous spin on an all-too-familiar tale of bad parenting."
- Alyse Wax, FEARnet

"With HEIR, Fatal Pictures have planned a stunning and memorable swansong. Set to delve into darker and more grotesque avenues than they have even ventured before, HEIR is certainly going to be another sucker punch from one of the most exciting independent studios out there. Be afraid, because you most definitely won’t be prepared."
- Colin McCracken, Zombie Hamster

"Powell is an unflinching examiner of the perversion of humanity that is born of our deepest fears, doubts, regrets and hidden hurts. He reminds us we walk among the wounded and mutated every day."
- Dave Pace Bonello, Fangoria

"Powell and his producing partner Zach Green are breaking new and horrific ground with HEIR. This project shows that the pair's festival monster FAMILIAR was no fluke; Powell and Green are in the vanguard of horror's new cinematic masters. HEIR is an honest-toGod, bonafide new notion of terror."
- Bill Oberst Jr.

Our goal is not only to create a chillingly memorable short film but to demonstrate what can be done after a film is funded. Our supporters will see the film they helped make in festivals around the world, in print and in distribution. That is our commitment, to produce one of the most successful crowd funded film projects to date. In need of further proof? You can check out our previous short film Familiar on FEARnet athttp://www.fearnet.com/shorts/familiar.

Description:
In addition to several new and exciting collaborations, HEIR will also mark FATAL PICTURES’ introduction to crowd funding. The campaign to fund the hard costs of the production will be launched shortly. This process will allow the film community a unique insight and stake in this disturbing horror tale. The combination of talent and passion we have brought on board so far means we have a great chance to create something special, but we can't do it without the support of film lovers, filmmakers and daydreamers just like you!

Support comes in many shapes and forms, a "like" or "share" of our page means a lot! This is your chance to help contribute to what stands to be the final short film from FATAL PICTURES before we stage our feature film debut. This is also your chance to take advantage of some of these great, fresh new perks!

• The full rights to an original, unproduced short film script from Fatal Pictures will be up for grabs. Make it, expand it into a feature, do whatever you like with it, it's
yours! The script, entitled VESSEL, embodies everything that makes a Fatal Pictures short film what it is; complex characters, disturbing social commentary
and our signature blend of horror and drama. Matchflick.com describes VESSEL as "a unique blend of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE and
FRANKENSTEIN".

• The original HEIR poster painting, signed by key members of the cast and crew. This is a one of a kind reward that one special supporter will claim.

• For fans of our previous film Familiar, we will be creating limited edition dvd/blurays, which will feature an extra special, exclusive bonus feature, which will
remain a secret until the discs ship. These limited editions will be the first physical release of Familiar for home use from Fatal Pictures, something that’s
been a long time coming!

• Continuing with the exclusives, two major props from our previous films will be up for grabs! From WORM, Geoffrey Dodd’s suitcase of horrors (hand crafted by
writer/director Richard Powell) and from FAMILIAR, the squid monster which John Dodd digs out from his leg! This unique piece of our filmmaking history was
created by the spectacular FX team The Butcher Shop (the same team on HEIR) and comes covered in dried blood and all!

These are just a few of our unique rewards, more to be announced shortly!
