Hatchet III (2013) - REVIEW

Adam Green is at it again with another installment of Hatchet.  I am a fan of the Hatchet series but not really sure how much they could really do with it.  It was not one of the movies I was really looking forward to coming out.  Today I was a Best Buy and saw it for a pretty fair price so I decided to take a chance on it.  I had heard good things about the movie but have also heard some negative reviews as well.  I had some time to kill today so what the hell.

Picking up right were Part II left off with Mary Beth (Danielle Harris) pumping shotgun shells into the face of Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder).  As she is walking away she finds a chainsaw and tries to get it started but Victor is not dead and picks her up by the throat.  Mary Beth frees herself and Victor falls onto the chainsaw being chopped into halves.  She grabs a piece of his face and heads to the police station with a shotgun in hand.  She is not really welcomed into the police station very friendly being covered in blood, holding a shotgun and the piece of Victor Crowley's face.  Sheriff Folwer (Zach Galligan) gets the situation under control and takes Mary Beth into custody.  Mary Beth is now locked up having told her story, the Sheriff not believing her still sends a team out to the swamp to take a look.  What they find is the corpse party that Victor left behind.  Amanda (Caroline Williams) is the sheriffs ex wife and she is a big believer in the Crowley legend.  She knows he is not dead and she also knows the way to kill him once and for all.

The Hatchet movies have always been one for gratuitous gore but this one really out does itself.  The shear blood splatter and innards spilling out is really enough to make this movie enjoyable for me.  You also have to respect the fact that there is no CGI used.  All of the effects are natural and the way they should be.  CGI really can ruin a movie for me.  I have alot of respect for Adam Green for refusing to use CGI.

Ultimately aside from the gore what I really like about this is the cast.  Danielle Harris returning as Mary Beth and also some genre veterans like Caroline Williams, Derek Mears and Sid Haig has a cameo as well.  I think part III is the best of the series by far.  The movie is just a ton of fun to watch for any hardcore horror fan.  I would rate this 7 out of 10 stars and suggest you get out and at least give this one a shot.  Stay twisted everyone!

Acort International Acquires “Quite A Conundrum” For Worldwide Distribution

Sex, drums, tequila, social networking, a pirate, morning after pills, Jesus and a gun... It's one hot mess!

Acort International, one of the top distributors of independent films in the global marketplace, has recently acquired the dark horror/comedy “Quite A Conundrum” for world-wide distribution. Distribution plans are currently in consideration which will include a North American DVD on the indie-horror label Midnight Releasing and cable/satellite/internet VOD run as well as being showcased at this year’s 2013 American Film Market.

About The Film:
Fed up with having “money people” have too much to say about his hart, writer/director Thomas L. Phillips set out to make a film completely for himself. “This is the movie I felt I needed to make, because I knew that in the fall of 2011, I was set to direct another drama, and I just needed to step back and do something crazy for myself.” So the director of the cult classic SPECIAL dEaD thought about his favorite guilty pleasure films (American Pie, The Hangover, American Psycho and Very Bad Things) and drew upon influence from all of those films to come up with something new that is unique, funny, dark, twisted, sadistic and just downright wrong. The vicious blend gave birth to Quite A Conundrum. After 12 years in Hollywood working as an editor, director and screenwriter, Thomas L. Phillips took himself back to his Southern roots to rejuvenate his passion for storytelling. The end result will make audiences laugh, cringe, scream, cry and think to themselves “Why am I even watching this movie?” but guess what? You will not be able to turn away from it no matter how hard you try!

Quite a Conundrum is currently enjoying a successful festival run so far receiving 21 official selections, 15 nominations and 7 awards. More festival information and the official trailer are available at the official website.

More information on the official release date in the United States is yet to be announced. Official artwork and more news coming soon!

Full Synopsis:
It should have been just a normal day of sex, fun, alcohol, hormones and debauchery for Tabitha and Mimi, two twenty somethings who care about nothing but themselves and what chaos they can cause. But that so-called normalcy gets tossed out the window when an unexpected and devastating event occurs at a nighttime pool party. As the alcohol begins to wear off and the body count rises, all hell breaks loose and there is no going back. As if the foul mouths, perverted attitudes and devious natures of Tabitha and Mimi were not enough, then just throw in Tabitha's walking porno of a boyfriend Sean and his new best friend, the sweet Dutch. Then mix in Mimi's eighteen year old virginal, confused and prudish sister Kylene and her sexually challenged boyfriend Harris, and the events gets even saucier. Then shoot in a splash of the old pervert Marc and his crazy unhinged wife Lola, and then toss in the Bible-thumping Jesus-freak Thelma, and it gets a little more crazy, dangerous, insane and scary.

Charity Wakefield also signs on for a pilot guest starring role. Co-produced by Universal Cable Productions and Lark Productions, the pilot is set to commence shooting August 26 in Vancouver BC. The project is based on the novel “The Lotus Caves” by John Christopher.

High Moon is an imaginative, out-of-this-world adventure series exploring what happens when Earth establishes colonies to mine the Moon’s resources and discover a new form of life. Chaos erupts in a genuinely emotional, humorously thrilling and always unexpected fashion as the colonists of the Moon race to uncover this life form’s powerful secrets.

Possessing years of battle experience, he is not only savvy but cautious as he knows things are not always what they seem. He is intent on getting to the bottom of the explosion on the moon.

Macon narrated HBO’s Animated Tales of the World, earning a 2002 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance. He has appeared in episodes of Nash Bridges, Law & Order, Without a Trace, Supernatural and Dexter.

Dana Davis will portray the cute, rugged, direct and charming Yama Winehart, daughter of General Winehart. She is also the first -- and last -- kid ever born on the moon. Charity Wakefield also signs on to the pilot for a guest starring role, portraying the smart and savvy Eve St. John-Smythe. Eve is British and has a rakish confidence that comes from being unfathomably rich. She is CEO of the world’s most profitable corporation and is responsible for opening up the moon by providing oxygen to the various countries there. This vision speaks to her fair-mindedness, but controlling who breathes and for what price is also a spigot the cunning businesswoman is happy to adjust to get what she wants. Her political posturing comes from her idealism, and ultimately what she wants is to make good on her family mission to make the moon accessible to everyone on earth.

Born in Sussex, England, Wakefield starred in the BBC1 productions of Rapunzel and Casualty 1907. She has extensive theater credits on the British stage including Constance in The Three Musketeers at the Bristol Old Vic, Elaine in The Graduate at the New Vic, and Susan in Baby with the Bathwater at the Old Red Lion Theatre. Diamantopoulos plays Ian, a chief investigator for the American federal government who is dispatched to the moon to figure out the causes of an explosion. First 3000 House on Straw Hill DVD's Will Contain Video Nasty Documentary

The 80s video boom has become a time of sweet nostalgia for movie fans of a certain age but in the UK it was also a time of moral panic perpetuated by ill-informed politicians and a sensationalist media. 'The Video Nasties' witchhunts which led to Britain becoming the most highly censored nation in the western world targeted distributors, store owners and a list of horror movies which were prosecuted as obscene and subsequently banned. David (PLAGUE TOWN, THEATRE BIZARRE) Gregory's two part documentary from 2006 tells the full shocking story and will receive its first official US release as a Limited Edition bonus DVD in the first 3,000 units of Severin Films' upcoming release of HOUSE ON STRAW HILL. HOUSE..., known in the UK as EXPOSE, was one of the final 39 condemned Video Nasties and remains banned in its uncut form in the UK to this day.

Severin Films partners Gregory and Carl Daft developed their passion for exploitation cinema while growing up in the 'Nasty' era in Britain. "There are a couple of really good VHS era documentaries doing the rounds in the US right now but growing up in England we had a very different experience of serious censorial oppression. We thought it might be time to bring out our doc on the period in the US," says Gregory. HOUSE ON STRAW HILL, starring Udo (Andy Warhol's DRACULA) Kier and Linda (BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW) Hayden, has the honor of being the only British film that made the infamous 'Video Nasties' list and the Severin Blu/DVD combo will mark its first official fully uncut release on disc. "STRAW HILL has proved one of the most difficult discs we've ever produced due to severely damaged film elements. The master is still not perfect but it's the only way to see the film uncut in its original aspect ratio. We wanted to give Severin fans something extra to compensate for the imperfect presentation of the feature and the fact that it's taken so long to get the disc to market. By including what we consider one of our best documentaries to date, which until now has only been released in the UK, seemed like the way to go. We had considered canceling the title on many occasions because it was such a dire situation but we just couldn't give up on it and we have it to where it's now acceptable to us, and hopefully to our customers. We also have another very exciting nasties release on the horizon so we want to raise some awareness in the US of that grim time for horror fans in the UK."

Other extras in the package include AN ANGEL FOR SATAN - AN INTERVIEW WITH LINDA HAYDEN and an audio commentary with Director James Kenelm Clarke and Producer Brian Smedley-Aston. And as yet one more additional bonus, those who buy the disc directly from the Severin store will get a strictly limited edition (250) VHS replica of the UK Video Nasty release as EXPOSE!

Prom Night IV: Deliver Us From Evil (1992) - REVIEW

I realized today it's been a couple weeks since I have sat down and reviewed something.  So this is one that I recently watched, watched it with Part III as a double feature which is the only way to own the movie on DVD.  This installment goes away from the main storyline from the previous two with the ghostly Mary Lou Maloney.  This is a standalone in the series much like the original Prom Night is.  Is it really as good though?

Back again at Hamilton High in the year 1957 two teenagers are in their car gettin it on.  When Father Jonas  (James Carver) from the local church slashes them with a crucifix that has a knife on the other end.  Fast forward to 30 years later and Father Jonas is locked in the dungeon of the church, chained up and heavily sedated.  Father Yeager (Kenneth McGregor) is up in years with failing health and it is time to teach his successor the secret about Father Jonas and how to care for him and keep the Devil from coming out again.  Soon he passes on and Father Colin (Brock Simpson) is left to care for Jonas.  He does not agree with the methods used to keep him sedated so he chooses to skip giving him the shot.  Father Jonas soon escapes to wreck havoc on unsuspecting teenagers that have sex on the brain.  Will someone stop him before it's too late?

I really do have mixed feelings about this movie.  In some ways I really like it but in others I really get fuckin bored with it.  When the action is happening the blood the suspense is all there, but it takes so damn long for the story to develop.  Way too damn long.  It has a young cast that really does a stellar job and a killer that is creepy as fuck but the killer is supposed to have aged 30 years and he barely looks 29.  They could have spent a little bit of money on some aging makeup for him and played it up or maybe just not have the opening scene take place in 1957.  Not that I can write a script any better but I can deal with the obvious.

I do think this is a good stand alone slasher just really needs to speed up the pace some.  I enjoy this one the least out of the Prom Night films.  It is more serious than the previous two sequels with no corny, cheesy humor at all.  That is not a bad thing but it would have really sped up the process.  I would rate this one 4 out of 10 stars.  Could have been alot better.  Stay Twisted everyone!

Drinking Games 2012 - REVIEW

Oh the joys of college. That time when you're finally free of the tyranny of your parents and get to make your own choices without the fear of punishment. Some use college for what it's supposed to be, a learning experience that propels you toward an eventual career. Others use it for what they THINK it's supposed to be, one non-stop Animal House type party where inhibitions are lowered and sex and nudity are fueled by copious amounts of drugs and alcohol.

Drinking Games is centered around two college roommates, Richard (Blake Merriman) and Shawn (Nick Vergara), who are at odds over what to do on a Friday night during "Snowmageddon". Most of the dorm is empty as it's the end of the fall semester and most of the students have left but for a few miscreants that who only want to party it up and get wasted. Richard however, just wants to finish his term paper when Shawn decides to throw a last minute party in their room. Enter the ever so creepy Noopie (Rob Bradford) with a crotch full of cocaine and a pension for bad behavior. Once the drugs and alcohol are flowing, Shawn reluctantly kicks Richard to the curb in hopes of finally bedding his love interest Erin (Katy Wright-Mead) but things go south when he leaves her alone with Noopie and her BFF Kennedy (Adriana DeGirolami). With every drink Noopie becomes more and more unstable and when the lines between fun and sadism begin to blur, no one will be safe from his manipulation.

Before I go any further, let me make it clear that this is NOT a horror film. It's billed as a thriller but I'm not real sure it's even that. In my opinion it had more to do with college aged angst and peer pressure than tension and suspense. Drama I think would be a more suitable genre for this one. Most of the criticism I have about Drinking Games is that I'm not convinced the film makers knew what kind of film they wanted to make and it showed in the finished product. It's kind of like two or three different genres crashing into each other but one never entirely wins out. So I was a little confused as to who the target audience was.

For a film filled with mostly fresh faces, the acting was surprisingly good. The main actors, Merriman, Vergara and Bradford do very well at carrying the film and even the minor actors show some great promise.
The dialog, especially at the beginning of the film kinda reminds me of the late 80's, early 90's dramas packed with "woe is me" teenagers whose situations eventually work themselves out for better or worse.
Director Ryan Gielen, while clearly talented, missed some opportunities here to carry the film over into thriller territory. Everything from the camera work to the lighting to the character situations just screamed drama to me. The film no doubt will find it's audience. It's very well done and very well put together but it's slow pace and lack of action will likely turn people away. For fans of the horror genre, I wouldn't recommend it BUT if you have a kid who's about to go off to college, it might make an excellent PSA about what kinds of people to avoid.

Dr Giggles (1992) - REVIEW

In 1992 the slasher genre was just about dead, if not dead it was definitely on life support.  Because no one really wanted to see those type of horror movies anymore any of them that made it to the theater performed very poor.  There are a few slasher gems throughout the 90's but nothing like the slasher mayhem that the 80's brought us, well until Scream came out in the later 90's.

Evan Rendell (Larry Drake) who is nicknamed Dr Giggles has escaped a mental hospital after leaving a blood trail behind him.  He is off to the town of Moorehigh were he grew up.  His Father was a doctor and he started killing his patients to try and save his wife's heart.  The town killed his Father and now he wants revenge.  Meanwhile, at the local high school it is the last day of school and summer is just beginning.  Not such a happy day for Jennifer (Holly Marie Combs) who has an appt with a doctor to determine whether she needs heart surgery or not.  Jennifer's Mother died from a routine operation so this is a big deal for her.  This town won't be so happy in just a few hours.  A man who thinks he is a doctor is on his way to make their lives a living hell!

Dr Giggles was released into theaters and as my foreboding from above depicts it met with bad review and a not so great profit.  The cast was comprised of mainly little known actors and actresses who were young and at the beginning of their careers except for Larry Drake of course.  The story itself really was not that bad.  I actually like it and there are really not too many plot holes and there is a good amount of humor which I was not expecting when I first saw it as a kid.  Guess the title may have been a giveaway but when you are young stuff like that tends to go over your head.

I really enjoy Dr Giggles and do watch it on a regular basis, at least once a year.  The acting wasn't particularly great but there is alot of sillyness and it was one of the first appearances of Holly Marie Combs who went on to star in Charmed.  The blu ray of it is actually a great transfer.  You can pick it up pretty cheap on Amazon or your local store, probably around 7 bucks or so.  I would rate this 6 stars out of 10.  Stay twisted everyone!

Sixty Second Slashers - Web series (2013)

Sixty Second Slashers is a Horror Anthology series that premiered on youtube on August 1st.  They will air on every Thursday and every 13th of the month.  The series is essentially what the name implies.  Short slasher segments that last 60 seconds.

I watched the first one and I really wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised.  I mean come on how much can you really get across in a minute but they manage to do a pretty good job from what I saw.  I'm going to do a synopsis of the episode cause well I would give it away.  It's only a minute long after all.

You can find the first episode here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvaQv90Y19A It's called Back to Post Apocalypse.  Enjoy and as always Stay Twisted!

Syfy Celebrates Fanboy and Fangirl Culture with New Docu-Series

NEW YORK – August 12, 2013 – Syfy celebrates superfan culture with Fangasm (formerly titled Fandemonium), a new docu-series that follows seven very different people whose niche uber-obsessions run the gamut from comic books and collectibles to science fiction and fantasy to cosplay and live action role playing. Living together and working together at Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, Los Angeles’ largest pop-culture convention, the cast must contend with each others oversized personalities and conflicting passions as they vie for a opportunities within Lee’s organization. Because when different passions come together – you get a real big bang.Fangasm debuts Tuesday, September 24 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.

These roommates stop at nothing to prove their fan-cred to each other, debating everything from favorite superheroes, Star Wars vs. Star Trek, and even what they would do in the event of a real zombie apocalypse. And while the claws do come out, this hilarious and loveable group is ultimately bound together by a shared joy of fandom.

Over the course of the season, the eager group dives into their internships at Comikaze as it prepares for the upcoming Comikaze Expo – the comic, gaming, anime, sci-fi, fantasy horror and general pop-culture expo held each November in Los Angeles. The massive convention is a year-round business, run by Lee, Regina Carpinelli (who guides the interns as their supervisor) and Cassandra Peterson (better known as Elvira Mistress of the Dark). The pressure is on for the interns, who all have high hopes of earning an actual job with the organization. Throughout the summer, they are thrust into a myriad of assignments, both in the field and at the Comikaze Expo headquarters. They pitch comic book ideas to Lee, clean a storage space belonging to Elvira, and pull out all the stops to plan for the star-studded Comikaze launch party. Along the way they get to meet the original Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei, a truly emotional and dream moment for one of the interns.

Can’t wait for Fangasm? Coming soon, www.syfy.com will reveal exclusive videos shot by the cast from inside their house. Sound off on Twitter with the official Fangasm hashtag @FangasmSyfy and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/fangasmsyfy.

Meet the cast:
ANDREW DUVALL – 27 – Valdosta, GA (Hometown) and Los Angeles, CA
Andrew always dreamed of being the Captain of the Starship Enterprise, but instead he works for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. When he’s not in his Star Trek uniform watching Star Trek marathons he can be found playingMagic: The Gathering. Sometimes he’ll do both at once. Andrew is self-aware in the best possible way, and loves making people laugh.

DANI SNOW – 26 – Burbank, CA
Dani was raised on the original Star Wars movies and the works of Tolkien. Reading Harry Potter and watching Lord of the Rings did not make her popular, but after high school she blossomed socially, and gravitated towards fellow geeks. She’s played a pirate at a Renaissance Pleasure Faire, and tours the convention circuit with The Damsels of Dorkington, a comedy troupe. She now spends her days doing special effects makeup on short films, performing comedy whenever she can and using her Harry Potter knowledge at her job to help identify copyrighted material online for the franchise.

KRISTEN HACKETT – 23 – New York, NY
Kristin is a single and sexy comic book fangirl living in New York City. She loves that the city she lives in is also the dwelling place of her favorite superheroes, namely Spider-Man and Nightwing. Her three passions in life are blogging geek culture, comics and fashion. With All-American good looks she is often hit on by jocks and meatheads; however, she’s only attracted to super dorky and nerdy guys. Her passion for comics and graphic novels is evidenced by her massive collection and commitment to travel the country to attend every comic convention possible, which she covers for her websites. She admits she is a hoarder when it comes to collectibles, and she was even compelled to create a giant spreadsheet for her collection of 600+ graphic novels. The obsessions are only overshadowed by her closet full of custom cosplay outfits. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, Kristin enjoys designing and creating her own costumes.

MIKE REED – 22 – Ybor City District of Tampa (Hometown) and New York, NY
Mike considers himself the ultimate comic book and superhero fan. He loves all DC comics and wants to live his life like Superman. He’s an active cosplayer and founded his own group called Team Avalanche, making amazing costumes and putting on shows across Florida. Even though he’s a nerd, he has quite the charm on the ladies. By night he will go to the club with a confident swagger, and by day he will sport spandex. Though he just received an amazing promotion at his job, he’s willing to quit for the opportunity to be an intern for Stan Lee’s Comikaze.

MOLLY McISAAC – 24 – Soldotna, AK (Hometown) and Seattle, WA
Molly is determined to show the world that not all fangirls are "the comic book guy.” A self-proclaimed fashionista and cosplay queen, she blasts away nerd stereotypes by being incredibly social and fond of the nightlife. Steadfast in her feminist beliefs, Molly is often labeled a "difficult woman" or "kind of crazy,” but it's just because she's incredibly confident and not afraid to be loud if she doesn't agree with someone or something. This makes dating difficult – especially since she only likes successful, professional geeks! But her social views do not mean her geeky interests fall to the wayside: she's particularly fond of anime, comic books, cosplay, video games, and LARPing. With incredibly sharp wit, an army of fanboys, and a secret belief that she's more intelligent than most people, Molly is a powerful force to be reckoned with.

PAUL PERKINS – 22 – Sacramento, CA
Getting this internship would be a double win for Paul. In one fell swoop he’d have a job and move out of his parent’s house. It’s every true nerd’s dream! Paul is passionate about all things comic books, sci-fi and Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments. He is a huge film buff with a massive collection of over 2,000 movies. While Paul is opinionated and outspoken, when it comes to girls he crawls right back into his shell. He lacks confidence around women, which he says is part of the reason he hasn’t had a girlfriend in over four years – that and the fact he likes to dress up as a Marvel superhero.

SALVATORE FRINGO – 25 – Amsterdam, NY
Salvatore is not what you’d call a shy geek. He’s loud and vocal about what he loves, and what he loves are superheroes. While he’s a huge fan of the heroes of the Marvel Universe, he doesn't discriminate against any characters because of their publisher. He may not be a gifted engineering genius like his comic book idol Tony Stark, but he does teach kids how to create their own superheroes, all while he dresses like Iron Man. He thinks of himself as a new breed of geek because he’s “attractive, funny, cocky…but with a sweet side.” He’s hoping that sweet side will be sweet enough to land him his real life Pepper Potts.

Fangasm is produced by 495 productions with Executive Producers SallyAnn Salsano and Joel Zimmer.
