Blood Brothers 2012 - REVIEW

I have had the pleasure of watching the latest installment in Horror by Slasher Studios.  Taking Horror into a new direction, away from the slasher genre and more in the suspense department.  The kind of suspense that The Last House on the Left and The Strangers were full of.  All packed into a straight to the point nail biter.

Coming home from their 5th anniversary Michael (Mike Goltz) and Lindsay (Hannah Hitzman) find that their front door is open and it appears someone has broken into their home.  Michael sends Lindsay across the street to a neighbors to call the police while he goes inside to investigate.  Walking through the house all seems to be in order till he is knocked out from behind only to wake up tied to a chair with his brother Chris (Matty Dorschner).  Is his brother going to kill him?  Over What?

This is not a very long film lasting only 10 minutes tops (maybe shorter).  Just goes to show you do not need alot of time to make your point.  The writing and the direction in this short is brilliant.  There really is not a dull moment and is loaded with good effects and plenty of blood.  The most impressive part about the effects of the film is the soundtrack.  The soundtrack was done by one of the film's stars Matty Dorschner.  An important part of independant Horror is that everything sounds good there are good sound effects and the music fits the tone of the film.  In this case Matty nailed it right on the head, no pun intended.  Blood Brothers leaves you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

Another well written short film from Slasher Studios.  I really wish the film could have been a longer but when your watching something good you really never want it to end.  Mike Goltz has seem to become a staple in all 3 of the Slasher Studio films and is getting better and better with each film he plays in.  Deviating from the slasher formula that made them famous with Teddy and Popularity Killer.  I love it!  I'm a big fan of suspense and something that keeps you wondering what is going to happen next.  I know this was just released but I am ready to see this as a feature film.  Stay twisted everyone!

Filmmakers to Raise Money for Krampus Project - PRESS RELEASE

Filmmakers to Raise Funding for Krampus Project
Independent filmmaking group Fighting Owl Films is planning a new short film project and needs your help to make it happen! Fighting Owl Films was founded in 2007 by Thomas Smith and, in addition to producing numerous short films in the intervening years, produced the feature film The Night Shift in 2010. The low-budget feature received favorable reviews from media outlets across the country, was named Best Fantasy Feature at Shockerfest International Film Festival and released on DVD by distributor R-Squared Films in October 2011. Since completing The Night Shift, the filmmakers have been busy producing C.U.P.I.D, a short romantic comedy currently in post-production.

The new film, Night of the Krampus, features a running time of around a half hour and revisits key characters from The Night Shift on a whole new adventure. The holiday-themed story delves into the mythology of Krampus, a legendary creature said to travel with Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. While Santa rewards the good girls and boys of the world, Krampus punishes the naughty. But that’s just a myth…or is it? When the naughty kids of a suburban neighborhood vanish in the weeks leading up to Christmas, evidence points to the creature's existence. It’s up to supernatural investigators Rue Morgan, Claire Rennfield and Herbie West to solve the mystery, save the children and face-off against the deadly Krampus.

Writer/Director Thomas Smith is passionate about the project. He loves the characters created in The Night Shift and is anxious to revisit them and reunite with the actors who brought them to life. The germination of the project began with the Alpine legend of the Krampus. Since first learning of the myth many years ago, Smith has been fascinated by the creature, primarily because it represents such a dark side of what is perceived as a bright, festive and happy holiday season. “I’m excited to explore the Krampus folklore because it isn’t a creature that's been done to death on film,” Smith said. “There are very few portrayals of Krampus in media, not to mention many people are unaware of the creature and its connection to the holiday season.” Smith hopes the film introduces the legend to a whole new audience. “And, if it encourages kids to be a little nicer, that's just an added bonus!”

Smith hopes to raise funds for the film through crowdfunding website Indie GoGo, a Kickstarter-like site with greater flexibility. The short has been budgeted at $4,000, which covers the rental cost of high-definition camera gear, the creation of the Krampus creature suit and makeup, props, general costumes, on-set meals for cast and crew, and post-production work, including color correction, visual effects and sound design. The filmmaker hopes to reach the full goal for funding within the 45 day timeframe provided by Indie GoGo. After that time, the project page expires. However, if the full amount is not raised, the funds that are received will still go toward financing the project. Smith commented, “We'll get as far as we can with what we raise, then try another funding effort to complete the next phase. Every little bit helps!” For those who support the project, several exciting rewards packages have been created as a way to thank patrons for their help. Whether people give a little or a lot, every cent is appreciated and we believe these packages show that.

The filmmakers understand that not everyone will be able to contribute, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still help. Spreading the word about the project, telling friends and family, posting about the project on websites or social media, is another great way to bring attention to the project and spread our reach.

Once funding is in place, Smith hopes to have the project in production by December of this year.

Amber Benson's "Dust Up" Going Down in 2012 from Breaking Glass Pictures

Domestic distributor Breaking Glass Pictures (5 Star Day, The Fields, Easier With Practice) bought domestic rights to the indie grindhouse comedy Dust Up. The deal was struck last week between CEO Rich Wolff and writer/director/producer Ward Roberts of Drexel Box Productions. Dust Up stars genre favorite Amber Benson ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer", Drones), Ezra Buzzington ("Justified"), Jeremiah Birkett, Travis Betz, Aaron Gaffey, Devin Barry, and Mike C. Nelson.

Roberts couldn't be happier about the upcoming release. "Dust Up is truly a one-of-a-kind film... fun, funny, scary, sweet, twisted, intense and gross all at the same time. We needed to find a distributor who understood that and could deliver us in the biggest possible way to the ravenous audience who hungers for movies like Dust Up. We are thrilled to be partnered with just such a company in Breaking Glass."

A one-eyed vigilante with a dark past has vowed to change his ways, trading his machine gun for a yoga mat. But when he encounters a beautiful young mother (Benson) in deep trouble with a cannibalistic drug lord and his evil goons, he realizes that justice must be served. Teamed up with his smooth-talking Native American hipster sidekick, our hero rides into the badass brawl of the century.

Dust Up had a private sneak peek screening at San Diego Comic Con on Friday, July 13th to select critics and contest winners from Benson's considerable Twitter following. Drexel Box Productions and Breaking Glass Pictures are planning a limited theatrical release in the fall season. Brett Schenker of Graphic Policy raved, "Yes, it's weird. Yes, it's over the top. Yes, it's hilarious." Likewise, Keith McDuffee of CliqueClack called Benson "flawless as usual."

The DVD will hit shelves in November, loaded with special features including an audio commentary with Benson and Roberts, Find the Pony, a behind the scenes featurette; various interviews with cast and crew, The Herm Dawg Diaries featurette shot by Betz, and the Dust Up Comedy PSA.

The Walking Dead Social Game Launches

AMC and RockYou today announced the launch of The Walking Dead Social Game," a story-based Facebook game based on AMC's TV series. Fans are invited to step into the zombie-filled world, where they will fight for their lives, help friends survive, and embark on chilling adventures with characters and settings from the show. Click below to play the game now!

The Walking Dead Social Game blends elements of strategy and survival-horror to create a unique, tensioned-filled social gaming experience. Faced with an ever-present threat from man-eating zombies (called "walkers"), players use combat, stealth, and trickery to stay alive and to complete missions in their quest to survive the apocalypse.

"The audience for AMC's The Walking Dead are passionate and deeply interested in the world of the show. Our social game allows them to explore and experience the zombie apocalypse for themselves, along with their friends," said Mac McKean, AMC's SVP of Digital Media.

The game offers a stat system based on the characters' attributes such as stamina, shooting accuracy, range of movement and vision. As you progress, you earn points, based on your skill, which enables you to improve on these stats. This all allows for players to customize the skill-set of the squad members. No one is safe as even the player's own Facebook friends may turn and attack as blood-thirsty walkers. The game was developed by Eyes Wide Games of Atlanta, GA.

"Gamers are ready for a more robust gameplay experience on Facebook," said Josh Grant, svp and GM of Studio Partners at Rock You. "We're bringing a thrilling survival-horror game experience to a more social platform that both long-time gamers and fans new to the gaming space can enjoy."

AMC concluded the second season of The Walking Dead in March of 2012. Indie Horror Actor Bill Oberst Jr To Host Pilot Episode of THE DARK CINEMA

Prolific horror favorite, Bill Oberst Jr (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, Dismal, Scary Or Die; as well as the Daytime Emmy-winning Facebook App, Take This Lollipop) is set to host the pilot episode of THE DARK CINEMA, a horror/thriller/sci-fi anthology television series, which will feature the short films of independent filmmakers in bite-sized half-hour segments.

Oberst, who has been dubbed “the new Karloff,” and also unanimously declared “the nicest guy in horror” by nearly every single industry person who comes in contact with him, had this to say about the project: “I can't wait to make like a modern-day Vincent Price. This is the creepy stuff kids dream of. I really love the short film format. It forces a director or writer to have a concise point-of-view. The films in the pilot pack a powerful punch in just a few minutes.”

THE DARK CINEMA was created by producer Cheryl Compton (writer of the upcoming paranormal thriller, Within The Darkness), who after nearly five years of working in mobile content distribution, saw that there was an untapped market for short horror films. “There are so many great short genre films out there. However, after their initial film festivals runs, they often end up fading away on a YouTube or Vimeo page. THE DARK CINEMA will bring these films to a wider television audience, not just the hardcore fans who frequent the film festivals and conventions. Most of these filmmakers made their shorts to showcase their talents, so we're hoping to get more eyes on their product.”

Compton continues, “we are so excited to have Bill on board the project. He will make a great horror host. Not only is he beloved by the horror community, he is is a passionate fan himself. He'll be able to speak about the genre and its history with respect and intelligence.”

Compton and Oberst have also teamed up for EVIL'S TOY, which is a full-length horror feature about a young college woman who becomes obsessed with a Ouija board and unwittingly unleashes a demon through the world of social networking. Compton penned the screenplay and Oberst is attached in the lead as the Demon Gadriel. They are currently seeking investors and production partners.

THE DARK CINEMA is accepting submissions from filmmakers. All horror/thriller/sci-fi sub-genres are welcomed. The producers are especially interested in films that have a possessed toy or evil object theme for the pilot, which will be filmed in early October. At this time, all films must be seven minutes or less and in a broadcast-ready format. Please see their Facebook fanpage for submission details and FAQs.

Little Big Boy: The Death Stalker Murders 2011 - REVIEW

Horror and Comedy always go hand in hand.  Now we have a Horror Comedy that is also set up as a documentary.  We all remember Leslie Vernon and how good that movie was and I for one adored.  Not that much of a documentary type of person, but some can catch me off guard and surprise me.  It takes one hell of a movie to do that though.  Let's see what we have here with Little Big Boy.

Jimmy Duncan (Kim Sonderholm) is a Horror film director who is notorious for having a very hot temper and controversial movies.  Jimmy has had a very painful childhood having watched his Mother being murdered and this haunts him throughout the rest of his life adding fuel to the fire that is inside of him.  In the middle of a shoot when his leading lady walks out and he is now in a though situation and becomes uncontrollable to the point of insanity.  The story is told in the middle of many interviews of film makers, actors and actresses in the industry.  Most of which do not care for Jimmy at all.  The one that is most prominent is the always lovable Lloyd Kaufman.  Jam packed with comedy, action, horror and the history of a very demented man.

Little Big Boy has good aspects, but most of what I saw was not what I would say is a good movie.  Lets start with the acting: Absolutely terrible?  Most of it you cannot even consider acting a little more than half of the movie consists of interviews with mostly fictional directors, actors and actresses in the Horror business.  The scenes in the movie when acting was really involved lacked what you would call, um well, acting.  The first scene when we see the temper of Jimmy Duncan in the movie he runs at a cast member of the movie he is directing and he knees him in the gut.  However, he almost falls down after doing so and starts kicking this guy on the ground and the kicks aren't even realistic at all.  I'm really hoping that part was meant more for comedy than a serious scene because I laughed my ass off.  Whether it was meant for fun or an actual Horror it's still pretty bad.

I am not giving the Direction of the movie a gold star either.  Because the interviews get really, really, really fuckin boring it really brings down the movie.  I understand it's in the form of a documentary but a real documentary you watch because you enjoy the subject matter.  A fictional documentary you don't know what your getting into when you turn it on and there has to be something that keeps you watching the movie.  If I was not doing a review on this movie I would have turned it off 20 minutes into it.  Now, I did say that the film had good aspects.  Really its only one, the one thing I like about the movie and that's the actual story.  The story itself is really creepy and what you would expect a good Horror movie to be.  However, the delivery from paper to the big screen seems to have lacked alot.  Personally I think this would have worked better if it was not set up as a documentary.  Out of 5 stars I would give it 2 and a half.  Really only because I like the actual storyline so much.  Stay twisted everyone!
